On my way to work yesterday in Perry county (20 to 25 miles from my house) I had a slight problem, about 5 miles from the sheriffs department where I work the coolant dummy light came on, I was like well shit (it has done this a couple times due to resovoir losing coolant from a blockage between it and the radiator). I stopped next to the station and got some bottled water to mix with my coolant and add, when I parked and popped the hood to add coolant I saw coolant all over the intake accordian hose, thermostat housing, fender, radiator, and fans. I was pissed, so I got to looking and found the source, the top hose coming off the thermostat housing going to a hardpipe and then to the turbo was leaking from a small hole smaller than the size of an eraser tip on a pencil.

Now I left it there and am going back up today, I was just wondering if there may be anymore damage to be concerned with. The engine did not get hot, or even exceed normal operating temp, but it did lose probably a 1/3 of the total coolant in the rad. Anyways I hope it works out ok, I need my car and hose failures piss me off.

Thanks guys,
Will

As long as it didn't get hot, it should be fine. At least that hose is relatively easy to get to. I'd wash or wipe the engine bay down asap though.

If it was your coolant line going to or from the turbo, I found AN braided works great there. (I can't remember if it was AN6 or AN8 line, but I think AN6...)

Anyway, the 90 bends are easy to find, just get the best one your local parts stores have. They have to deal with quite a bit of heat, so higher silicone content is a good idea. (Goodyear has a blue hose that is high silicone, and it's available in pre-formed 90 bends, but it is more money.)

I'd replace the hose, fillup your coolant, check for leaks, then before your engine is too hot, wash off all the spilled coolant at a coin operated car wash. Just keep water out of the spark plug valley, and don't spray your CPS wires either... Just a little condensation there can shut down your day... But the good news is a squirt of WD40 on both sides of the plug, and then plugging it back together usually solves the problem :)

Good luck.
PS: I don't think you damaged your car either.

Thanks guys,

We went up this morning, got the hose replaced it was just a short 6 inch hose from the thermostat to a hardline that looks like it goes to the turbo but may not but its the top most hose off of the thermostat, we refilled the coolant but we are going to have to flush the system anyways, also going to replace the thermostat and upper and lower hoses as well to be safe once we have flushed the system.

I used simple green and cleaned off all the lines and items that had been coated with the coolant, so thats all done, no leaks anywhere else so far, no overheating at all, and light is off but we still plan to clean out the system and replace the previously mentioned stuff to make sure the cooling system is up to normal.

Jackass mechanic that did the engine replacement a couple years back neglected to clean the system out. So now I have to do it.

I've popped that hose too... most people replace it with the only hose that's that size, fuel line.

It will fail because it's not meant to take the heat. I ended up buying it from the dealer (it's not too expensive)

you should be fine. i literally split my upper radiator hose half it's length while doing a full throttle pull in third gear uphill. coolant completely covered my engine bay, and made it out onto the windsheild. not fun.

replaced the hose, no problems since. (it was weird, as that hose wasn't even that old!)
