so ive been driveing my car with the new motor for about 850 miles now and ive been trying to work the kinks out and get it running better. but i dont have a timing light so today i went over to my friends shop to see if i had a timing issue. well... my timing was sat at 96 advanced!!!!!! wow my friend at 1st said theres no way thats right is shouldent be running right now! so we checked to make shure the pully was lined up right and everything checked out right. so we tuned it down to 80 and it runns alot better now but i need to adjust the cam poseson sensor when i get the time so i can get it down to 10.
so has anyone ever herd of a running car at 96 advenced timing? no wounder it was running like crap... lol

Holy crap is right, Batman! I am thoroughly surprised that the car even ran. Glad you figured it out and should def be alot better now. I've def never heard of timing being that far off before.

I had a similar problem with a much worse outcome when I first got my supra and then the notorious BHG a month later. The guy (old boss' brother in law) was great with domestic muscle cars and assured me he could handle mine. He had the head re-worked and ordered a 1.2 mm HG without checking how much was taken off the head and block. Once I got the car back I was throwing codes everywhere and when the engine was pulled apart again you could see where the pistons were slapping the valves/head. Everything was chewed up. :3d_frown: Lesson learned.

I bet they didn't use the right timing light at your friends shop.

If you want to set it yourself (like you said, right?) here's what you do. Go to the parts store and buy a simple inductive timing light, and some coolant (don't forget distilled water, tap will not cut it). Take the upper radiator hose off along with the thermostat housing. Take the upper timing cover off. Take a 19mm socket and breaker bar, spin the crank until the cam matchmarks line up with the notches on the inner timing cover. If this does not happen, go to the dealer, buy a new timing belt and install correctly. Take the CPS cover off, verify the CPS rotor is pointing at about 1 o'clock, about 1/4" away from the top signal point. If this is not correct, go to the dealer and buy a new o-ring for the CPS, take the CPS out and install it according to the TSRM--->line the drilled mark up with the notch on the CPS housing. Reassemble everything. Jumper T and E1 terminals at DIAG box. Connect inductive timing light. Start engine, verify 10 degrees of ignition timing, if not, loosen CPS bolt and spin it. Drive vehicle and enjoy.

ya the timeing was deffinatley that far off.. i set everything at 0 and TDC and took the cover off of the cps and it was a bout an inch and a half away from whare it should be.... so i adjusted it and put it all back togeather and it fired right up and runns great! i hooked up the light and took a look and after minor adjustments it was right at 10. so all is good!
