running the stock BPV vented atmospherically is bad.. mmmkay? worse than running a real BOV vented. the stock bypass valve is designed to fluctuate between open and closed at idle, and that can make a world of problems for you.

a blow off valve/bypass valve isn't about a cool sound. it's about functionality with the perk of a cool sound. when shopping for one, you should ALWAYS hold functionality over form and sound. ALWAYS.

besides, recirculating helps keep the turbo in spool between shifts...

can you elaborate on this please? iam trying to understand why the stock bov would be required to do so.

bov = blow off valve. usually higher capacity.
bpv = bypass valve. this one will bypass the excess pressure to pre turbo when the throttle plate is closed.

how come some people have surge with the hks and some don't? i used to have surge with my old bov and then i go a hks and properly adjusted it and i got not surge.

I never knew you should recirculate it.. I have the HKS SSQV and have it ventilated to the atmosphere. I had the same setup on my last supra. I never had problems with it, although I never had any major mods done either. This thread has me worried about messing something up. Should I buy the recirculation tip for the hks or just buy a bosch bpv and have them both running?

you're not going to kill your car by running it atmospherically. it's just better to do it that way. the sad thing is- most people buy BOV's placing it's sound quality over it's function.

it's better to recirculate it. it helps keep the turbo in spool while shifting, and doesn't make you run lean between shifts. you're not going to kill your car running it vented to the atmosphere. but you're losing a bit of power every time you shift when you run rich.

it is, however, probably not noticable, but it DOES happen. :)

for what it's worth, i'll be running a SSQV, AND a bosch BPV. i'll probably recirculate them both. (and i'm running the maftpro w/ speed/density- so it's not like i need to.

i'm believe it has something to do with metering air for idling, in conjunction with the ISC. i could, however be wrong.

ok, the hks ssqv...as soon as i read this thread i bought the recirculating tip for it. I probably could just wait to get it and figure it out but how does it hook up to go in the air system?

if you're removing the stock BPV, plug the port on the 3000 pipe, and run the HKS recirculation line into where the stock BPV entered the accordian pipe, pre-turbo.

maftpro is a breeze to wire up, and buy it from dr. jonez. trust me, you won't regret it. help out the little guy! he's the one that made it all possible.

or you could run a bosch bypass valve in conjunction with the HKS SSQV. (which is what i'll be setting up this winter. :))

by the way. i <3 my maftpro.

hi shaef,

do I need dyno time to get the maft pro running/ tuning ??

thanks

The whole purpose of the MAFT-Pro is so you will not have to dyno NEARLY as much as you would with a standalone unit. The MAFT-Pro has a base tune to get the car running once it's been wired up correctly, then it's all in the fine tunning. Once you have the car running just right and how you like it. You can go get it dyno'ed to see what power you are making, and then make fine adjustments if needed ;).

the only reason i'll be going to a dyno is to figure out how much power i'm making. not to tune. i've got an lc-1 wideband (picked it up from dr. jonez- he has a group buy going on now actually) and i'll be doing all the tuning myself.
