Mine has neither the power or ground wires, and responds just as yours does. No illumination, and it blinks.

I read up on that blinking, and it's when the TEMS system errors out. I guess I must have a bad ground then, because you don't even have yours grounded and it definitely needs to be. You might have to pull your wrapped area apart and look for the straight black wire inside that to wire it back up.

I tore mine apart last night to check it out, and I was mistaken. I do have the ground wire, just no power wire, just like your unit. I have it grounded into the stud where the 10MM bolt goes to hold the kick panel on. Does anyone have any info on how to wire this thing up correctly? Obviously this is a newer design that receives power from another input, but where? I'd like my $300 investment to work correctly.

That's what I'm leaning towards too. HKS must have made a change between the pre-89 and 98+ year model. That might explain why the black/black-white power wire mine came with looked a little out of place. Might have been a mid-production line change.

Best,

Brad

Yup, we're all gonna have to figure this one out. Anyone with a lit HKS with power wire, can you post a pic of the back of your unit? Apparently a wire needs to be soldered in to make the unit work as it should.

Nice.....

Now, if you wouldn't mind... pop the HKS out of the center console and take a pic of it for me... please? :biglaugh:

...don't mind if I do...;)

Shot these before I saw this post... so we'll have to see if you can see anything useful or not... then I'll shoot again if necessary.

I'm posting digital photos of the ANCIENT manual from the full suspension system on my car. Note the yellowed pages! (Had to dig through a BUNCH of HKS stuff... and it was the LAST ITEM in the pile!:biglaugh:)

^^^ Sorry, didn't know you needed close-ups of the wires to circuit. May not be real clear without some work. Let me know if you still need it...

Dug through a bunch of my manuals and found some stuff that might be useful...

There. The black/white wire that is OUTSIDE of the plastic tubing. THAT'S probably the power wire we need.

Hey Crisp, take a pic when you get the chance of where that black/white wire attaches to the back of the HKS. That will probably be the solder point we need.

And, AWESOME WORK, DUDE!!!!!! :icon_bigg

I notice that the earlier units still have 10 wires. However, one of the black/white wires is ran separately for power. There already are 2 black/white wires coming out of the later HKS TEMS units. They just both go to the harness and actually connect to each other mid-way for whatever reason. If you're not getting power to your unit, I recommend splicing into the thicker black/white wire. However, since they meet midway it may not matter which black/white wire you splice into.

It's impossible to tell from the pic, but Crisp, do you remember if the power wire is thicker than the black/white wire on the harness. It's a tough call since they are only one guage off.

Thanks! I'll see what I can do. (DARK right now...)

It's clear to me, there is a gauge difference. I'd put it at 18 and 16ga without seeing the strands. Black/White stripe outside the harness is the larger gauge.

I'll try to get a shot of where it terminates on the controller.

IIRC, the black wire with white stripe is removed (cut or whatever) from the plug that interfaces with the TEMS computer located in the kick panel. It's then given ignition power and the unit should work as advertised. I had one of these years ago went through the same situation at that time.

My car is a pre-89, just to answer the question posted above. So your saying I should cut it out of the interface harness going back to the controller, and give it ign. power? What wire do I need to tap into down there that has ignition power?

Remember, there is a power plug in the center console from the old TEMS controller you pulled out to install the HKS. That should have a black/white wire on it because the old controller piece has three wires coming from it, and one of those is black/white. If he's correct, all that needs to be done is clip the black/white wire from the HKS Controller (given sufficient length), and power it up using the black/white wire from the old TEMS controller connector.

Now, $64 question. Whose brave enough to cut that wire on a $300+ part to try this out? I've half a mind to do it right now since this has been so aggravating, but I have to sleep for work tonight, and don't relish pulling the center console out (again!) to find that power plug right now.

See that lone black/white wire from the back of the HKS OUTSIDE the hose? That's the one supplying power. His is a newer model, so he has two black/white wires coming from the HKS, one going to the power source and one going to the kicker panel.

Could just get 1 of the blue wire tie type connectors. That would mean you only have to cut the wire on the old tems body harness. Then tie it to the uncut existing wire coming out of them TEMS controller. I may try and tackle it tonight and see the results. Right now all my controller is is a paper weight, what can it hurt? You say I should tie in to the thicker black wire with a white stripe, correct?

Well, I did it, and it works. I cut the wiring that goes into my OEM TEMS button, so that I wouldn't need to butcher up my factory body harness. I then cut the 2 wires that weren't the power wires off flush with the backside of the connector so as not to allow them to ground or cause any other issues. I then connected into the factory body harness connector, and tied it into the TEMS controller harness at the thicker black and white wire. My controller powers up as intended, and works like a charm.

Sweet. I will be doing this tomorrow!

Thanks to all who helped. I will be using this data to do up a full writeup on this controller and the TEMS system and include everything here so that others looking for these same answers will not have to reinvent the wheel!

Awesome Job!!!
