Most people are not aware that HKS changed the intake design. The filter used in the famous air filter test is not the one that is now sold.

The hks "reloaded", now has a 3 layer filter with a very fine middle section to trap the small fine particles. It still is no APEXi, but it is not all bad anymore.

It is also one of the few LEGAL intakes for MK3, important for smog legal cars.

Another problem I've seen with HKS filters, is that over time they can degrade and get sucked into the turbo. Hopefully that is another issue that they resolved, but I'd still never run one.

Back to the AEM and Apexi. Can anyone say if one brand catches more dirt than the other? I've yet to see some real test results performed with the AEM.

That's ANY foam style filter. Foam is only good for one thing, and one thing only, as a pre-filter.

They're the same basic design, but the Apex'i has the internal funnel design that should flow better...

both will most likely flow more then the afm so it doesn't really matter.

Well, that's where the AEM seems to win... On a larger turbo and if you no longer have the AFM you can get a larger one.

Apex'i makes universal ones too though I don't think they're as big...

The HKS filters are garbage!!, I just pulled one off a 1jz, and there was 1/8" of crud built up inside the intake pipe and that was after the filter. K&N's are fine, I also had one on my 7m and had no problems wit the AFM. AFE also make a decent filter, the AEM's are one of the best, I just wanst aware of how many universal sizes they had.

If you want a bad case of dirt and crud build up take a look at a intake thats been running a blitz filter..They need shooting for designing something like that.Metal screens ftl

Lots of the MKIV guys seem to run the Blitz SUS filters because of it's flow and sound, but around here with the dust...

You bring up legal...
What are the other legal filters? Does it change by state?

I'm running the Apexi Intake and can't complain.
As far as "legal" goes in WI thats not a problem.
