see the thing is... the engine being 180 degrees off would be a good explaination for the sound. But most of the time when starting it, it fires up and runs for a few seconds, then slowly dies out. and if you feather the gas you can keep it running, but only rev to like 2000 rpms. It doesnt usually make the sound, Its just he knows how to start it wierd to make it make the sound.

i had this problem. It was exactly the same noises as this clip.

I had problems with..

CPS being off (caused rough idle)
Leak at throttle body (gasket)
Fuel feed line was leaking
ISC hose (to turbo inlet) wasnt connected at the time (caused whistle)

The cam gears have three holes for the pegs, did you put it in the center hole on both gears?

the cams may not but the gears will. if it won't idle you won't be able to time it with a light.

double check the mechanical timing(cps, gears, crank).

I would just like to note again that this problem started on its own, before we touched a thing. The motor began making this noise after trying to drive it with 2 rod bearings that were completely shot.

The motor cant spin 180 degrees out of timing on its own(I think). It also made this noise when we reassembled it twice. So that would mean that the car would have to develope this problem and then we would have to reassemble it twice without noticing. Im just mind boggled by this.

OK so we worked on it in the damn rain using a shitty tarp.
We got the car to idle and rev. It idled way too high at around 2k-2.5k, thinkin it was because it was cold, it never went down. The temp gauge wasnt working...Friend moved the car about a foot each way...The turn signals were not working and the reverse lights stayed on.

So after fixing the temp gauge, we try cranking her over, it made a pop near the right side of the intake manifold, not a good sign. We tried again and couldnt get it to turn over...We Give Up.

You would be surprised how far out of time the motor will run on. After doing my first head job on a mkII a buddy and me set the timing like we normally would and went on our way. Turns out you have to do it a "special" way (not the same as mkIII's) and it worked fine. We had a lot of popping on the intake side...

I really wish I could help... No wires or anything got under the manifold when you put it back on, did they?

*Edit*
This sounds really messed up... But on my 82 if a certain fuse blows my car will run like crapp, it hasn't happened in a long time so I don't remember if it makes a noise like that or what... but I do know that I was able to diagnose it while driving by something, incase you are curious it was the haz/horn fuse. Sounds messed up, I know, but I can promise this is the way on my 82 for one reason or another. Doubt this will help, but just another thing you might want to check if you get desperate enough. It's worth a shot. And what is that reward up to? :)

hey man.... theres no need to take your frustrations on my tarp. The tarp would have kept us perfectly dry if it stopped raining. haha. You guys better just hope I dont go to CT sometime without you, cause im gonna smash that car up. It has actually made me think twice about owning a supra at all.
