Hey guys, I don't ask much questions on the here because I hate asking stupidass questions, but I feel this one is important. I need a way to tune my car, because Im running too rich. Although rich is better than lean in any turbo car, theres got to be a certain point where rich is just too much.

The car is an 88' Turbo Standard.
Quick pic since I never really introduced my car:

As for mods:
Head & Block
Re-Surfaced Head – Decked Block – HKS 1.2mm MHG – ARP Head Studs – New Aisin Oil pump – New Toyota Timing belt – New Toyota Waterpump – All new seals + Clevite Bearings

Induction
K&N CAI – 60-1 Trim CT26 -- BIC Dual Divorced Downpipe – 3” BIC Test Pipe – 3” HKS Sport Exhaust – 2.5” Aluminum Intercooler Piping – XS Power FMIC –
HKS SSQV

Fuel
Aeromotive AFPR – Walbro 255LPH Fuel Pump – Precision 550CC Injectors – Lexus V8 AFM

Electronics/Fuel Management
Autometer Sport Comp Boost Gauge – Autometer Pro Comp Water Temperature Gauge

Cooling
Stock Clutch Fan -- Stock Radiator – Mopar 5.7L Oil Cooler

Suspension
KYB GR2 Struts – Stock cut Springs

Brakes
12” Slotted Rotors Front and Rear – Axxis Brake pads Front and Rear

Miscellaneous
Relocated Power Steering Pump – Removed EGR – Bypassed J-Tube – Removed Charcoal Canister – 89+ 3 Piece Taillights – 89+ Climate Control – 91 Mirrors – 89+ Steering Wheel – 89+ 3 Piece Wing

Now for my problem.
I am thinking of what to use to tune the car. I want to use an APEX'i SAFC2, but I was wondering if I have to use a HKS VPC as well. I dont have the money for both. IIRC, the VPC can only control fuel up until 2000 RPM, after that, the SAFC controls fuel. Is this true? What do you guys suggest I use to tune? Right now I'm running a 60-1 CT26 at 10 pounds. The fuel is definitly there, all I need is a Profec-B and something to tune with. My main question is:
Is it possible for me to use the SAFC2 alone to tune?, or do I need a VPC+SAFC?

All help is greatly appreciated,
Thanks,
Ryan

You can use your VPC with your SAFCII but definitely don't have to. The VPC will get rid of your MAF (but you already have lex afm) and provide basic fuel tuning (and yes you can tune throughout the rpm band). To expand on this tuning you can get the HKS GCC (graphic control computer) or a safcII to run in tandem with the vpc. So unless you want to get rid of your MAF, then no, you don't need to use your VPC. Hope this helps!

I'm guessing you bypassed or drilled out the JTube?

Not sure what the price of the other electronics are but I would consider Maft pro as well. I love mine.

The MAFT Pro writeup looks really good. Definite respect to the user who did that write, nice and neat. Right now I'm looking at the cost benefit. If I buy a SAFC2, its going to be $200 used, then if I buy a Greddy Profec b, its going to be about $150 used, then I would still want the VPC because I want to get rid of the Lex since I can't even get a proper filter in there. I want to have the option to run open turbo if I can, if not, at least be able to run a hardpipe right out of the turbo into an air filter. With the Lex, it doesnt allow me any space to do that.

As of right now, it looks like MAFT Pro here I come.

Some Questions:
Can you set your boost with a MAFT Pro?
Does a MAFT Pro react funny in low temperatures, such as standalone?
For a little over $500 I can get an adjustable fuel controller, a boost controller, and having other various tuning abilities?
Other than fuel, what can I adjust using the MAFT Pro?

suprahabsfan : Thanks for your help! but the MAFT is looking real good right now =D
mhopemk3 : Jtube bypassed & have you ever dynoed your car? What kind of power have you made with your setup?
Fletch124 : Thank you for putting up the links for me to do some research and find out what this is all about, I'll take a deeper look into it. Do you know if Dr.Jonez still has this item?

All of your help was greatly appreciated,
Thanks guys

Feel free to chime in with other suggestions!

First...you need a data logging wideband, i don't see one in your mods...next

maftpro is ideal

personally i use SAFCII alone, and it works great, solid steady AFRs

So without a wideband, MAFT Pro is a no go?
Dammmmit! In that case, Looks like I'll have to go SAFC2 for now.
You use the SAFC alone correct, no VPC involved?

Tuning without a wideband is NO NO! Your going to need one either way. Get yourself an AEM UEGO or something from Innovative.

My downpipe already has the wideband bung, but now I need a wideband. Ive read that the AEM UEGO is a really good wideband, too bad I missed the GB here... Any of you guys running the UEGO? How is it? I read that with the MAFT Pro, you can set your AFR's for your RPM's. So if I was just driving around one day, cruising on 14-16 psi, I could set enough fuel to compensate for that amount of boost. Then, if one day I went out to run, Id be able to turn up my boost, as well as increase the fuel to match.
My goal is to have a 400RWHP RELIABLE DD. Now will I drive around all day running enough boost to make 400? Hell no, not with gas prices the way they are. The most important thing here, is trying to make a clean 400 instead of a rich, puffy black 400.

The first thing I'll do is start looking into the UEGO. Thats my best bet. Until I can see my A/F's, I won't know how to tune anyway.

UEGO is hyped up IMO

Zeitronix ZT-2 is where its at.

I have an AEM UEGO and I love it. A few months ago I read a big review where they tested ~10 different wideband systems. 1st and 2nd place were given to Innovative and AEM.
