I want to tighten the top nut on my rear drivers side shock cause when I drive my car the shocks make weired up and down noises over bumps. I know its loose. But I can't tighten them or loosen them because the rod moves with the nut.

Any suggestions?

Im going to put washers in between the nut and pillow ball mount to stop the noise.

Are you sure it's the strut mount? Anyway, the strut mount and the top of the strut are supposed to be D shaped to prevent the rod from spinning, sounds like the mount's been stripped. I don't know if you can tighten it with the rod in the car this way, but you need to get some vice grips on the rod from underneath. Get them clamped on higher than the shock travels... very important.

You'r right about that D on the strut mount. I forgot thats what keeps the rod from moving. I already tried using vice grips (I put a folded piece of paper in between the vice grips and rod so it wont get damaged)and it did'nt hold to well and I was a little scared I might damage the shocks by tightening the grip. Maybe I will try this again tomarrow.

If there are any other sugestions I'd really appreciate it. The noise it makes when I'm driving is so anoying...

New pillowball mounts would be the best thing. This actually happend to me too in the front. I think I used pliers wrapped with something and an impact gun. The impact gun was the main help.

Cool, I'm glad I'm not the only one that had to go through this. Thanks for telling me about the impact gun...Great tip.:icon_razz

If you can keep the shock tube from spinning (either vice grips or better yet new upper mounts) put a couple of washers between the shock nut and the top of the mount to take up the slack.

I did that before I replaced my original tems shocks and it worked like a charm. No more clunking.

Over the pond
I hear a clicking noise somewhere near the shock. It doesn't come from the top, but from the middle of the rear left tower. My shocks were changed some time ago, and after that, the porblem occurs.
Do I have the same problem as thread starter?
