I had this problem, and it got me extrmely worried.

Each time you go to put it in reverse, go to third gear, THEN into reverse. It works wonders.

Ill post up the thread were i had this problem.

Reverse is not synchronized, except in some high dollar cars, so pompous ass owners don't have to think before backing out of a parking spot.

I always do that, and yes, it works wonders.

Anyone got the technical reason for why that works?

Yes, but it doesn't have to be 3rd.

The gears can freewheel on the shaft, you would have to see one to knwo what I am talking about. And putting it in gear while stopped will stop the movement inside the trans.

I have that prob. too. If your car doesn't want to go into reverse when you try to put it there, don't force it. Put it back into neutral, let off the clutch, then press if back in and then go into reverse, works every time for me. I'll have to try the shifting-into-gear-then-going-into-reverse method and see how it does...

There is usually a little bit of drag on the input shaft even while the clutch is pressed so the gearset will be spinning slowly then you try to engage reverse being a straight cut dog gear it clashes, pulling a forward gear stalls the gearset allowing reverse to go in quietly.

Thanks Ian, I've had a couple instances where it did make a slight grind while putting it into reverse, but nothing like it would do it you tried to force it in...

You don't even have to really pull a forward gear just push the shifter like you're going to and the syncro drag will stall the gearset enough for reverse to engage ;) (i no longer have to care about this)

That has happend to me a few times, what I like doing is inching up in first gear and it will usually slide in to reverse. Just a thought.
