alright, so as the subject implies, my car just started acting funny. i drive a 1986.5 toyota supra. the body has 250000km and the engine has 80000km. on my way home tonight, as i pulled away from a light, i noticed the car chug a bit and a sweet smell coming from the vents. a couple minutes later, when i pulled up to my house, i also noticed an excess of exhaust and the sweet smell had not gone away. i sat for a minute and also noted that the car was idling pretty hard. does anybody have any idea what this might mean? i appreciate any and all responses i might get. thanks.

Could be a coolant leak or blown headgasket. Check coolant and go from there.

well, i hope it's not the headgasket. the engine, as i said, has only 80,000 km's on it and until today felt great. my stepdad (former mechanic) seems to think it may be a problem with the heater core, after i described the symptoms. how would i go about checking the coolant anyways; quick apologies, i'm still new. i should also state, that this jdm motor should still have a couple months remaining on it's warranty; parts not labor of course. any other ideas?

Heater core shouldn't cause the engine to run rough.

Blown head gasket wouldn't give u a sweet smell through the vents (UNLESS its entering in somehow from the exhaust, or from a leak in the exhaust)

Check for leaks everywhere, check the passenger side floor for leaks, check your engine codes, and if you're really fearing a BHG, check compression.

the smoke from the exhaust andthe sweet smell kinda tell you its burning coolant... so thats usually a BHG considering you got a used engine in there

alright, so i dropped the car off at certigard this morning and i should be hearing from them any minute now. the more i think about it, the more i'm thinking it's the headgasket that's gone. assuming it is, what would everyone suggest i do? should i go stock oem headgasket, or step it up and try some sort of metal headgasket? thanks for the input, i look forward to hearing from everyone.

For a non-turbo car, I'd just get a new OEM style head gasket. Unless you figure you want to bolt a turbo on there sooner rather than later.

I suspect that you've got a BHG and the extra pressure in the cooling system has sprung a leak in one of the coolant hoses... we'll see what certigard says.

well, that headgasket blew worse then my ex girlfriend. certigard informed me that cylinder #1 was full of coolant or whatever after they ran the compression test. i've just spent the last little while looking around, getting an idea of what this'll cost me. i'm also trying to decide whether or not i should just scrap the engine and go 7m-gte.

no. a blown headgasket is no reason to scrap an engine. unless you want to go turbo and have the money, there is no need. get certigard to put a new gasket on (which you provide from toyota) and tell them to torque the bolts (which you provide, ARP or toyota) to about 72 ft/lbs.

then, after that, take it back in about 500 miles and get them to retorque the headbolts just in case.

they should know how to do that. and it really shouldnt cost a whole lot.

well, tell them that you'll buy all the parts. i have never done it, but somebody here can give you a good estimate of how many hours it takes. then ask themn their shop rate. if they do it right, and your engine runes fine afterwards and they make sure they dont contaminate your oil with coolant and cause a rodknock, whatever price you are willing to pay. I have no idea and any shop is entitled to charge what they like. if you have the means to do it yourself at all, i recomend that. but only if you know you can do it properly.
