here is the diagram i made since there are errors and omittances from the diagram/chart that everyone is referred too.

fyi, i referenced the tewd for omitted pins and ground wires. i used this to install my 2002 Subaru WRX indash 6-disc... which works just like stock.

you have TWO illumination wires. a positive and then a ground which routes back thru the dimmer. if you dont hook up both to a factory radio, your illumination will be inverted or inoperational depending on which wire you (incorrectly) choose. you must hook up both for proper dimming/operation.

i think....i....love you.....

:biglaugh: j/k

AWESOME stuff man I appriciate that a lot, and i appriciate it INCREDIBLY if it works...which it looks like it should. I just got a little overwhelmed and pissed that my colors didn't seem to be in the diagrams and blahblahblah blah. Your little mod has all my colors, which is great.

basically you've made me quite happy and I will try this as soon as i get a break tomorrow! hell i might do it if i just have a minute before i leave for school!
I'll be sure to post up my results!

I have a 2000 tundra radio connected to the stock 90 external amp in mine. There are a bunch of different connectors between the HU and amp depending on the year, but they actually only vary in the number of grounds up to around 2003 or so.

Looking at yours I suspect that is the 92-99 connector. Here's the pinout. But, if you are using a matched pair you should not need to swap anything around, it should work as is.

thanks. i think it's a step closer....sadly i quickly tried it this morning but it did not work. I suspect the problem is the cable between the amp and head unit...because i keep getting bad results...not getting any closer.

---------EDIT!!!------

there's one discrepancy and it's an important one... i don't have two black wires! I have black one for my speaker... do i have a brown ground instead? thats the only color you do not have listed so i plugged it into the spot where a black ground was supposed to go.

also...what should i connect my illumination lead onto? i'm going to have to attach it to something...there's no white wire with a green stripe in my car's dash harness so either its a different color or i'm missing something..

Thanks, i'll compare this to what i have and see if i should make any changes...

still not there yet though... it lights up a little with my dash lights but no radio power yet...

it DOES click with a pulsing tempo when the key is out though - not right - there's power where there shouldn't be....

i'll go mess with it and see if i can't get closer with some trial and error...

So, if I understand correctly, the original radio connectors on the car have been cutoff?

If so, you need to make sure that those loose wires aren't going back to the stock amp under the passenger seat. If they are, then you have a few different paths you can follow to make this work.

ok some butt head logged me off while i had a message here...soo its going to be shortened...

Yes, original connector or connectors - dont know how many - were cut off. i had a hole and a harness with no plugs to work with.

I have no visible amp under my passenger seat. hidden? hope not. i dont think there is one there.

I may just try plugging the wires into the single plug from the amp i have, and bypass the amp. if i get sound then i can rewire somehow or just use my kenwood amp... i just need the damn thing to power on...lol.

you may have to find your grounds and Ill circuits w/ a DVM tester. you have an old car, so maybe all the wiring diagrams in the known world might not pertain to you... lol, get an 87!!

lol....THANKS A LOT!!

lol. DVM - digital voltage meter? I'll do that this weekend.

BUT GUESS WHAT!?! in my quest for a stereo system, i've successfully fixed my dash clock, electrick mirrors, AND MY CAR ALARM!!! it works perfect!! i was so stoked because i thought the previous owner trashed it! but it was just the damn radio fuses!

YAY!!

Soon, hopefully, i'll be getting a picture of a harness from a comparable year. i think. so i'll update if i make any progress.

-------SECOND ATTEMPT STARTS HERE--------

OK I am going to go out and try to rewire the stock stereo harness so it will at least give power to the head unit.

I have a question though, if this works, what wire should I use to run from the head unit to the Kenwood amp, and then from there to the stock speaker wires in the dash? Just generic speaker wire from K-mart or even the dollar store? I'm not looking for anything high-budget here... the stock wires don't look that high-quality anyway.

I just wanted to make sure I get something with sufficiently low resistance and I was a little afraid cheap wire might cause problems. i plan to run these wires under the carpet to the center console from the passenger seat.

Not quite sure what your problem is.

I have the same headunit and amp as you do (I think). I just plugged it in and it worked. I just had to ground both the amp and the headunit. Without grounding the amp it wouldn't work - it would just make a clicking noise.

My car is a 1992.

Tell me if I can be of assistance.

I think you might be already!

Can I just use a wire to ground the amp? how did you ground it? i tried before but i think i did too poor of a job and now that i think about it, an amp has to have a good ground.

I get that clicking.

I'm reworking it to try the OEM amp again...

but yeah if you could elaborate on how you went about properly grounding it. I am testing it out of the dash because i dont have mounts.

I just made a bracket holding the amp and the headunit together that way grounding them both when the headunit is put into place. I also ran a wire between the two just to make sure.

Mine didn't work when I was testing it out of the dash because it had no ground. I thought I had a broken unit but when I put it in the dash together with the grounding of the amp it work perfectly.

YES!!!

I got it to work!!!

I took a pair of portable speakers and a voltage tester to confirm what wires were the speaker wires and discovered I had two reveresed! On the wiring diagram posted on the second page (i think) it says the speaker wire is blue while the power wire is blue with yellow, those are REVERSED. so the diagram, is WRONG. minor though, everything else works.

EVEN MY POWER ANTENNA! haha...i was worried it wouldn't...i've never had it go up because this is my first time hearing the stereo.

The speakers are small though and thus lacking, so now i'm going to look into getting the kenwood hooked up to see how it will change things.

I'm going to make a new thread now that my problems are solved.

THANK YOU EVERYONE! and thanks for reminding me about a proper ground! I made a better one and i'm sure that helped too!

I'll post pics laterrrzz!

Just to let you know, that diagram you modded to help me helped a lot, thanks! it was incorrect for my application however if anyone down the line reads this. the "blue" and "blue with yellow stripe" needed to be switched. I confirmed first with a voltage tester - easy.

NEW Questions -
OK so now I have a new quesiton, should I run my system with the OEM 4runner amp and then into the Kenwood amp? will that help much?

I'd rather not try to bypass the stock amp...it might screw things up..

Also, how do I go about getting power to the kenwood amp? I'm not sure what the best and most common place is to grab power from.
