All,

My engine needs rebuilt. 87 Turbo with 62-1 Garrett Turbo P-Trim, Lexus/550, SAFC I, AFPR, Walbro, 3 inch exhaust. Max HP want to achieve = 500. Car already has HKS 2.0mm metal headgasket and ARP studs, rebuilt manual transmission, remanufactured head.

I don't understand what is compatible when something is oversized, so any help in any of these is appreciated (non standard stock sizes).

I want to purchase the following new from Toyota (makes sense with a rebuild):

1- Timing Belt
2- Oil Pump
3- Water pump
----------------
The following from horsepower freaks or similar company:
4- Pistons with wrist pins, 0.40 oversized
5- Eagle Connecting Rods -- what do I need for the 0.40 oversized pistons?
6- ARP Main studs
7- Thrust washers
8- HKS Stopper Headgasket 2.0mm 86mm bore <-- is this correct?
9- Rod Bearings - I can get standard, .25, .50 or .75 mm over. How do I know what I need?
10- Main Bearings - I can get standard, .25, .50 or .75 mm over. How do I know what I need?
11- Valves

I know what these look like and what their function is but I am not sure about compatible sizes.

As far as the main and rod bearings go, it all depands on the condition of your crankshaft. You can just polish it if it is in really good condition or have it ground undersized if it isn't that great and then used oversized rod and main bearings. The problem with grinding your crankshaft is that it removes the nitrate finish from the factory so I would recommend having it nitrated if you have the crank ground.

The car is in nice shape, but I really can't say if the crank needs ground or not. Can I purchase these things now like the main and rod bearings without the car being inspected by a machine shop or would it be risky and may end up being a waste of money if I need to purchase a different size?

I guess I am asking what things on my list are OK or safe to purchase ahead of time before it goes to a machine/mechanic shop? (For example everything but the bearings, etc).

I would have the machine shop inspect the block first before you buy anything. What is the reason that you know that you need a rebuild? make sure the cylinders and crankshaft are not scored badly and that nothing is badly bent or broken.

Thanks. I agree. A machine shop can tell me what I need. Car has 128,000 miles, new turbo and a mechanic who worked on the car recommended a rebuild. I know the engine will not last long under the stress of the new turbo.

I use Champion for OEM parts. Horsepower Freaks has a lot of parts for the MK3. What other places have members gone for the aftermarket internals like pistons and rods (eBay?)
