Help. Grounding thing on alternator

It's a noise suppressor, you can try it without it but I'd still use it, can screw it to ground anywhere and just extend the wire to reach.

It just filters "noise" to prevent it going into the Car's wiring and maybe screwing with the Radio or ECU/Sensors.
Frequency type noise correct? The stud on the old alts a little longer. Trying to find nuts to take it out.

There are a bunch of them throughout the car, in the old days without Caps you could "hear" the engine RPM through the radio 
I still do that sometimes, just gotta find the right AM station. Crank up the volume and i'm in a F1 car .

Not that it matters much but technically speaking the lead on those things is as short as possible for a reason. It's why you'll always find them mounted on the rear of alternators to begin with.
