Hello there,

I am from Calgary, Alberta and just started getting myself into this hobby of Supras. I am 16 and just purchased my first car with my own money (parents didn't buy me a car I worked my face off at my job at a bike shop). It is a 1987 Toyota Supra Turbo. I am very pleased with my purchase and have had nothing but fun with it. The guy I bought it from was very knowledge about the car and was very helpful. For the most part the car is in excellent condition. The only thing that needs to be done is the engine light is on and the code is 52, Knock Sensor. The fellow I bought the car from told me to come back in spring and said we would work on it together to get it fixed. He told me that I need to learn this stuff. The sale also came with numerous extra parts which I am told will be very valuable. I am very excited to learn about this car and so far this site has been very informative. I decided it was about time I made myself an account. The supra is white and has 200,000 kms / 125,000 miles on it (Canadian Car). The car is stock right now and I have no idea what direction I should go with it. Anyways thanks a lot for this great forum and I hope to continue to learn from you guys.

Scott

Theres some pictures from when I picked the car up.
Thanks for the help guys with the pictures.

Welcome to Supramania Scott. It is nice to finally come across someone like yourself. Posting pictures can be confusing at first, but after you do it a few times, it gets easier. I use Photobucket.com Go there and set up your own album. Upload a few pictures, copy the

This is so nice to see an introduction post that isn't completely useless. WELCOME!!!

I'm interested in your R134A stickers under your hood. I'm assuming you have had a retrofit done to the car? Does the A/C work? Anyways, good luck with the car and enjoy your time here.

Thanks for the positive feedback everybody. I really appreciate the welcome from you guys. I am not very knowledgeable about Supras yet but I hope to learn as all of you have. Regarding the Air Conditioning, the previous owner had gone through all the technical stuff with me but I can't quite remember. Apparently they use a different type of gas in the system as they do nowadays and my car had needed to be updated. So it was taken to Toyota and they made the system compatible with the modern gas. As of now the air conditioning does not work but it just needs to be charged because the car sat for 3 years. So to anwser the question the air conditioning will be working before summer. Right now the weather here is minus 20 degrees celcius. Horribly cold, so I haven't had time too think of air conditioning. The car sits in a heated garage during these tempatures though because I've heard bad stories of cold and cars. So again thanks for the support guys. I'll definetely be posting on this forum as it is very helpful.

Very nice car.. nice welcome post as well..

Your car is in Supurb shape... keep it that way..

Take a look around the forums and get to know the flaws and advantages of the supra...

The first "mod" we will ALL suggest, is torquing the head bolts to 60FT lbs or get ARP head bolts and torque it to 75 FT LBS. This eliminates the odds of getting a blown headgasket.

The headgasket blows quite easily on the supra.

Also, another pointer is to add an additional .75-1.0 quarts of oil. (over fill it) this cures oiling issues which can cause the dreaded Rod-Knock

Welcome, and hope to see you around!

I just have one question. How much did you pay for that. It is in excellent shape. I'm actually impressed. I am about to purchase one in CA. Right now I'm in South Korea but its good to have sources all over the place.

Hey, welcome to sm, I agree with everyone. You sound like a decent guy and the supra looks amazing. Nice to see someone young interested in the MKIII supra, not jumping with the hype with the MKIV's, and choosing over many others as his first car. I'm not old myself :p but a lot of kids these days don't appreciate amazing and rare cars like these ones.

Also I suggest to go to the General MKIII Discussion Area and read up on the Reference/Tech-tips sub-forum, there is some great info in there waiting to be soaked up. (There is a tech tip section on the SOGI website and supracentral website worth checking out as well, we have a few they dont, and vice versa).

Another good place to look is in the dedicated expert subforums. There is an electrical one, a engine internals/mechanical one, oil and lubricant one and a few more, those are from the top of my head. And lastly, another good place to check out, Informative Links. There is a subforum for these in the General MKIII Discussion Area as well as one in the 7M area.

Trust me, if you have spare time browsing the, these are some of the best places to look. They will help you familiarize yourself with your supra quicker and you will find that you need to ask significantly less questions.

Pssstt...how much did you pay, and what kinds of ideas you you have in mind for her first? Welcome, eh ;)

-Shankar.

Thanks for all the replies,

The guy I bought it from actually had rebuilt the engine 40,000 kilometers ago so the headgasket has in fact been done. The Toyota Supra is a car getting rare up here in Calgary as many of them die to rust. I was able to find this one and jumped on it. I payed 6,000 dollars. This included hundreds of extra parts (A full truck load). The guy I bought it from was very organized, an aircraft engineer. He had all the small parts in a file with them labeled and in plastic bags. He knew what he was doing and as I said before he told me to go back in a month or two and he would make adjustments on the car with me and rewire the knock sensor. As he said, I need to know how to work on the car now not him. Overall great guy and I'm very pleased with the car. I am just about to roll over 200,000 kilometers tonight. I am very pleased I picked this car as my first and I hope to keep it looking very nice. It is a car becoming more and more rare and I hope to keep mine as one in great shape. As for my plans for the car? I have no idea, I have been looking at cars on here and trying to decide the direction I would like to go in. As for now I really like it and I want to keep it in great running condition. Thanks for all the comments everyone.
