Ya. Given that the helicoil kit is labeled for the 7/16-14 and thats exactly what the bolt is and thats what size the coils are, I'm going with the tap being wrong.

The thread pitch is wrong. Even if the bolts were the right size, it wouldn't work.

Correct. The bolts *are* the right size for the helicoil kit. The tap I received is NOT the OEM helicoil tap that comes in the kit. The problem is solely the tap, everything else works together.

It looks like you've gotten it all figured out already but just to reiterate what has already been said:

TPI has to be the same from tap to helicoil to stud/bolt.
Your 7/16-14 helicoil tap will have 14 TPI still but will be a bigger diameter than a standard 7/16-14 tap (7/16 bolt + helicoil thickness = helicoil tap diameter).

Now the problem is going to be when you run the correct 14tpi tap into the 13tpi holes you're going to change the thread form again....

If it were me I'd buy a set of 10mm Keenserts, these use a 14x1.5mm tap and have locking pegs to prevent them backing out ever.

Most times when the studs strip out the head holes it indicates the head is annealed.

Well the good thing is that when I was attempting the helicoil, it was more difficult than I felt it was worth. I wasn't confident I was doing it right (check my BHG thread in sig for details). So I didn't do anymore holes after the first. I still have the entire kit(since DM packages an extra helicoil for mess-ups;))

If I use these again (which I hope to) I will get the head hardness tested to make sure its a worthwhile venture. My only problem now is that I need the tap from the kit which is pricey by itself.

I'm still waiting to see what Aaron says about this.

When I was looking at Keenserts they where WAY too expensive for my tastes...

taps can be found at a hardware store, not a home depot place, but a place that has lots of tools, bolts, washers, ect. and there normally under $10 for a good tap.

"Reading Comprehension" isn't just for Christmas ;)

The HeliCoil Taps are custom made taps to their specs so YOU have to pay the $ they ask.

i said taps, not helicoil caps! :sarcasm:

i dont see why driftmotion isnt handling this... i mean, he bought the kit from them right? lol

if all else fails, go buy a heli coil kit either online or at a local auto parts store.

Yes but what good is going and buying a tap going to do if it's not the correct freak helicoil size?

I'm sure Aaron will make it right when he's made aware of this as it's an issue that could affect other customers.

My thoughts exactly. Although I am just noticing this now and its been about 4 months since I used the kit. I PM'd him yesterday again after adding the pics, I hope to get a response today.

I didn't know about this thread until right now. If you got the wrong tap packaged in our kit, I will gladly send you the right one. That is not the tap kit we usually use though. I have sold MANY MANY of the kits and never had any problem like this.

But basically from what I can understand in this thread, you used the kit 4 months ago, but only now figured out is was the wrong tap? And didn't you say to me that there was a chance you could have got the tap mixed up at some point and weren't sure the one you have is the one I sent you? Were you the one who bought just the studs and nuts recently? So did we even send you that helicoil kit?

Please clarify what is going on and what needs to be done to resolve this issue. I have 4 cylinder heads sitting here if you need another one, I was only asking $100 ea plus shipping for them.

You have PM.

Cliffs:
PM'd you about the thread a while back, didn't want to surprise you. :)
Yes, I am only now realizing the tap is not correct, 4 months after. (stupid me)
I had said there was a chance the tap got mixed up on your end, not mine ;)
I did NOT recently buy head studs or nuts, but I did get them 4 months ago
Finally: I'd love to get the correct tap. I have an extra head in my workshop, so no worries there. :) The head I mis-helicoiled is on the car and holding fine for now anyways.

I really do feel responsible for messing it up. It was a learning experience in more ways than I imagined and there are no hard feelings. (Though I would like to have the correct tap)

I can send the old one back if you'd like it as well. Not sure I'll ever use it.

Just as an update, looks like Aaron is taking care of the shipping mishap very well.

Buy from DM when in doubt. :)

Even when I first ordered and I had a question 4 months ago, I called him directly and talked to him personally after two rings of the phone. Pretty good customer service for an internet shopping experience. ;)

Glad to see you got it figured out.

As for tap size, you had the wrong tap, 1/2-13. Even if you got a 7/16-14 tap, it would still not work. The correct tap for the Heli Coil inserts has an STI designation, (screw thread insert). For all Heli Coil type inserts, you need to use a tap of the correct pitch, with the STI designation. In your case, a 7/16-14 STI tap. The tap drill formula is also different from a standard tap, the tap drill size will be larger for the Heli Coil tap. You can find additional information on Heli Coils at,
