Hey guys, my heater valve went on my 89. Do you guys think it's worth it to buy a heater control valve from the dealer for 150 or should i just buy a used one?

I see the used ones going for about 20-40 bucks.

you can bypass the solenoid and try putting direct vacuum to the top nipple. with the engine running the valve arm should go up.

also depends on wat you want out of the car. used one could crap out anytime and the new one wont.

i did run a vac to the top until it started leaking coolant. Thats when i took off the vac and started freezing on the way to work in the mornings. Afternoons...not so bad. I drive with my hood on lol.

Mine cracked while driving, spraying coolant all over the exhaust manifold. After a tow home, I bought a used one. After installing it, I bought a new one from Toyota. I decided I didn't want it to break again.

Unfortunately, the hose clamp on the input side gets tightened too much and the plastic pipe just can't take it for long.

Geo Prism/Corolla valve. $45 new. I also replaced the factory screw clamps with CT band clamps. Never had a problem again. Had 10 years on it when the car left me...

They changed the design on the Geo Prism and Corolla Heater control valve.

It takes some work...but nothing too hard.

The throw is reversed on the aftermarket ones. and the levers don't swap without some filing. :(

I'd snatch up a new one from Toyota for the 89 corolla..

Huh. I remember there's holes on both sides of the valve so it can mount either way to accommodate the throw and the lever just screwed on. It's been a long time though.

Prism and Corolla are the same car, Alex...

Sorry Alex, I'm just unclear.

New aftermarket Four Seasons Heater Control Valves for the Corolla or Prizm are reversed. On the supra when the leaver is down the valve is closed and it's not flowing water. On the new aftermarket valve; when the leaver is down (speaking from the supras point of view) the valve is open, and the lever calibration is quite off.

My fix for this was to take a file and file down the nylon on the new valve until is was rounded and copied the supras "calibration" (so when it's fully closed you actually have some flow), and to remove the filter going on the VSV and attaching the vacuum line there so when the motor is running the heater valve is closed and when the vsv receives signal to open the heater leaver drops and you have water flow.

Nothing too hard and you save 30+ bucks.

Say what? On the supra when the lever is down the valve is closed and flow is almost stopped (it's designed to always flow a little).

Keep in mind "down" to me means towards the ground ;)

Opps. ;)

Yep I took the little flow into account...lol

But I made the wrong valve work. ;)
