if I take the head off and it's been rebuilt recently do I need head work? Cuase I'm told it's gonna cost 300+parts+machine work... and my turbo needs a rebuild, I don't want to just throw money away esspecially when I just had the head done not 2000 miles ago. When I took it off the shop owner told me to clean it, when I did the "lifters" (little round metal caps) fell out, I have no idea the order in which they go in, how screwed am I? Who sells a gasket "kit" that includes an mls headgasket?

There are many head gasket kits on ebay, I have the head gasket out of one if you want it. It cost me $38 to sonic clean my head and $24 to disassemble/reassemble the entire head and install new valve seals. That's all I would really do unless you want all new valves, springs, etc. Are you wanting a metal hg and are asking how much it is to mill the head too? I think that was right around $40 for me too. As for the cam followers (lifter buckets), it's better to have them all in order when removing, but in your case, when you are reassembling your head place them all in and install the cams and then just shim them according to TSRM.

I'm asking if anyone sells a metal head gasket with all other gaskets neccessary when assembeling the head. I'm being quoted 300 to install new valve seals and seat/adjust the valves... and that sounds high doesn't it?

Seating and adjusting valves is (somewhat) time consuming and shims cost a lot.

24 r/r sounds right though. Valve seals from Toyota (if you aren't supplying) are big $$$.

the required gaskets and oil seals in the head can be ordered 1 by 1 at toyota dealer. since your head was recently done you wont need new stem seals.

As for the shims and buckets falling out thats a PITA... the buckets wear in and shouldnt be mixed if it can be avoided. as for shims you are in for lots of measurments and it would be best to leave the shimming to the shop cuz even a shop can take up to an hour or 2 just to sort out the puzzle.

crank needs to be out and they usually want the exterior of the block bare as well. Something about using the main bolts to set up their machine. They also need the main caps with it.

ok, my head guy is insisting that milling the head is adequite "trust me... blah blah" is this true? I mean, I've read milling is a no-no but I don't wanna be like "look you don't know wtf your talking about, I read on the internet..." also (yes I've searched) what is the most reliable 2mm headgasket?

HKS 2mm STOPPER, accept no substitues.

If you're using that one, then the block must be pulled also to have it machined with the head (preferably on a CBN machine) to get the RA (Roughness Average) down as low as possible for the head AND block. Try to get the RA down to at least 15.

As far as getting gaskets with a MHG, there aren't any makers that do that, that I am aware of. Felpro is not a MLS HG, so that one's rulled out. I don't think Cometic does a full kit, but I could be wrong. If you are wanting a 2mm MHG that's know to be the most reliable, then get the HKS 2mm Stopper and order a full gasket kit from Toyota.

ANY metal head gasket must have a flat, smooth surface for BOTH mating areas (head and block) They must also be smooth enough to seal, most manufactures don't go any lower than an RA spec of 20, so 15 is playing it safe. The smoother the surface the better the seal when it comes to a MHG.

If it has never been done YES, and even if it was recent it should be within the RA listed above or atleast 25 RA is where i was at using a non stopper HKS gasket

Today I was talking to a toyota parts rep. He told me I could probably prepare the block myself for a metal head gasket. How hard is this to do? Has anyone prepared their own block? He said you just have to prepare the suface with hand lapping tools? Has onyone done this?

It is possible, but definetly not the best way. Tell the parts guy he can tear the block down to have it done right the second time.
