I was told you can't re-use the old head bolts after taking them off. I was wondering if this is true, and if it is where can i get new ones? All the auto stores I called said they can't get them.

What kind of project are you doing? HG replacement? stock or metal? Either way I suggest ARP studs(which you can reuse)

If you want stock ones, go to toyota... *bring lube* My advice would be to look at our vendor section and talk to one of them about picking up a set of head bolts or studs... I recommend studs, no matter what your hp goal...

i reused mine, but i was doing stock hg. They were fine i used them 3 times, lol. But the only time i used arp's one of my threads in my block got stripped...lol. i guess just 20 years of work. Toyota stock bolts for all 14 they were going to come out to 86.46...i still remember. So i order some arp head bolts for 97 and some head studs for 115.

studs will cause less stress to the threads in the block.

you HAVE to use a blind tap to clean the holes in the block so the studs will seat FINGER TIGHT. If not, removal will be...damn impossible...

Studs are VERY cheap insurance, and will help line up the gasket and head...

I don't know on the head bolts, but you can reuse the studs as many times as you like as long as there isn't any damage to them and they are torqued to spec every time. A heat treated head stud doesn't require a retorqued once the final torque value is reached. So if you have ARP studs that are being reused and are perfectly fine, you can torque them properly, and forget about them.

Stock Toyota bolts are torque to yeild, highly recommended to NOT reuse them once they are torqued down.

not torque to yeild, but they aren't going to take the higher torque values you need when running high boost.
