Wow figgie, that's expensive. I got mine at a hdwe store, for about twelve bucks, and it's still going fine.

Somehow I doubt it....

You got the run of the mill intermediate tap. Those are a dime a dozen.

BOTTOMING taps on the other hand. I had to special order this type of tap from fastenal. NO ONE ever carries these are they are only used by specialized machine shops. Throw in that this particular taps is HSS and the price goes up even more. Right tool for the right job!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taps_and_dies

bottoming tap not to be confused with the run of the mill Intermediate taps sold by Sears, Home Depot, Ace Hardware, Northern Hydraulics etc.

I really wouldn't ever under any circumstance try swapping bolts without pulling the head. I'd be constantly worried one of the new ones had too much gunk built up to be properly torqued. It doesn't take that long to do, if you're gonna bother do it right. Retorque it as is and leave it be. If it blows, do it right. Don't half ass it now, you'll end up redoing it later anyway...

Well, it's a bottoming tap that matches what I was taught about bottoming taps, and it's worked well in the past. I'm sure yours is better, but a lot of people don't have 65.00 to spend on a tap. I'll have to stick with mine I guess.

Hey figgie, I just looked at your wiki link, and see that mine is a plug tap. I'm thinking a judicious use of grinding, and I could get my tap to approximate what you have.

would it be bad to retorque with original bolts? cause this would be the third time. if not im just gonna follow this link. http://cygnusx1.net/supra/TechTips/head_retorque.aspx

I retorqued my bolts on the 7mgte and have not had a problem but... the stock bolts are torque to yield bolts and i'm told they don't do too much more than their stock spec. Instead they stretch because apparently that's what they are designed to do.

Bzzzzz...WRONG!
Stock head bolts are not torque to yield. If you look in the TSRM, they are not marked for replacement when removed. They have been tested by Reg Reimer for torque at 68-72 ft/lbs. The 7M bolts are identical material to the 2JZ head bolts and have a yield strength of 147,000 psi. For comparision, ARP 7M head bolts have a rated yield strength of 200,000 psi.

Next time you post in the Tech section get your facts straight before you post. "I heard" or "I'm told" does not cut it.

ummmm

I would be careful! taps usually don't grind well. they shatter very good though.

i am not sure if i told you they were torque to yeild because I don't recall but they are not. basically TqTY, use once. throw away. Can not be reused, need very special equipment etc.

You gotta go nice and slow, very little pressure, and not heat it up. I did it right after I posted, look at the pic. Worked PERFECT! Cleaned the holes to the very bottom.

Both!

You're talking about the weakest link in the 7M here! It's not a matter of if you'll get a BHG...it's a matter of when! Knowing all you can know about the rebuild is the key. ESPECIALLY, when it comes to the Head Bolts and Head Gasket.

If the rebuild was done right with the right parts, you may just very well dodge that BHG bullet.

i know the head was rebuilt and resurfaced, and the hg was replaced. it may already be torqued down to 72ft lbs, but im not sure and want to be safe. what else can i do here other than pulling the motor apart, getting a metal hg and studs?

A re-torque is all you can do without taking the head off.

The Felpros are good...I got my replacements at NAPA. Came with the hold down grommets too. Hasn't leaked in 2 1/2 years.
