I have the motor taken apart right now, just waiting for the engine to cool. I'll probably do it tomarrow at 6am. Since everything is running good, no weird overflow action, no using coolant, no overheating, I'm going to just make sure they still hold 70ft/lbs. I was reading a thread by crisp named torque it, and he retorqued his head studs and said some of the rear ones CLEARLY lost tension but did he loosen then tighten or just tried to tighten them and only the rear ones moved?

dont mean to thread jack, your compression is high or mine is low... My last compression test was 150 across the board w/ the throttle open, yours is 180 across the board? did you shave the head? Alldata shows 150 psi is a high spec for a 7mgte. If your indeed 180 across the board, dont buy your gas at wallmart...

I usually check them to "torque spec" with a "tighten" only at first. (Static "SHOULD" be greater than initial torque, unless they have "relaxed"... in which case there would be "no need" to back them off. If they have "held" at 70, or whatever you used to tighten... then "cracking them back" and THEN "re-torquing" is a good idea, IMHO...)

I find it interesting to see what "breakaway" is when doing this. It can be hard to "note" without a "peak hold" needle (in a dial-type wrench) or a digital... neither of which I have at home. (I LIKE the dial w/peak hold that we use in the QC lab!)

Hey thanks for that crisp! That picture of you with that cheerios hat was funny as hell and is what got me to get in there to "TORQUE IT".

I use a digital snap-on torque wrench. Its my favorite tool. It costs like $300 but is very worth it.

Frank,

That post makes all the effort to "illustrate" my journey and deliver it "with some humor"... well worth the extra effort! It is this forum and those who are sharing their impressive builds and advanced skills that are continuing to motivate me to try things well beyond my experience and previous comfort!

G/L with YOUR journey...;)
