head bolt re torque.

Im comsidering buying another supra, with a "new" 7M dropped in about 3 months ago.

Now the owner is a toyota mechanic, and he torqued the head bolts down to factory specs on a factory head gasket, would it be wise to torque them up to 70 (thats what ive been seeing)?

Do NOT drive or even run the car until you have retorqued the head bolts.

ah i see. The thing that threw me off was I told him that I thougth the stock specs werent tight enough. He told me some other reason...Didnt know what to say, cause he works at toyota, as a mechanic. haha

well factory torque specs = possible chance for a BHG, supramania torque specs = long lasting engine, i torqued my head bolts to 72 ft. lbs. after my head gasket replacement, still runs perfect till now :)

Oh, i know that. When i Dropepd the engine into my current car, we tightneed those bolt before we dropped it in. :thumbup:

Who: I wouldn't bother given that criteria.

Most times people start to think about a retorque on an old engine is when it starts to exhibit issues and by then it's too late and the retorque usually just speeds up the failure.

Once a stock headgasket starts to leak, it's done, no matter how much you torque it down.

The sealing rings around the water passages and the combustion chambers get moved from the leak. On a MHG unless it's burned through usually a retorque is fine (there is the issue with the viton coating, but it's not nearly the same issue as with the stock gasket).
