Well, I just got through, today, reading a rather lengthy article on just this subject of bolts, studs, nuts, torque, and lube, and sealing surfaces.
Motor Service, Feb. 2002.
It stressed that you should always follow the maunfactures specs for a particular bolt.
I believe Toyota says to use motor oil on the factory bolts. You can look up on their website what ARP says to use, or email them for other suggestions if you don't have what they recommend.
The reason to use what is recommended is that the design engineers decided it. If you use something else, you will actually be applying either to low, or too high a torque on the fastener. That can cause trouble.
