Over heating can be cause by a lot more than just a head gasket. Fill the coolant and the reservoir, easiest way to make sure it is full and does not have air bubbles is to pick up a $20 filling funnel (a special funnel that attaches to the radiator) run the car with this on until the thermostat opens and make sure you get the air out. You can have air trapped in the system making the system not get full of coolant, and not letting the thermostat open. Also make sure your cooling fan clutch is working, it could be bad and not spinning fast enough.
Also why do you figure its overheating? Does the gauge read high or do you have boil over into the reservoir. If its a temperature problem, if it rises steadily and never sits at the middle it may be a sticking thermostat or air in the system. If it steadies out and middle then starts to rise again after a few mins its probably a cooling fan issue.
