There is enough space between the motor and trans to put your hand in I was told to twist and pull

If its a manual, you need to pull out the clutch fork through the access panel on the bellhousing.

The access panels are the two black plates bolted on the bell housing right? How do I pull out the clutch fork?

you take off those panels, there a c-clip that holds on the big ass pin in the middle of the clutch fork. you'll see it... just pop that off and then get a screw driver to lift the pin up and out comes the shift fork.... and then apart comes the transmission!

i learned the hardway like you did too...

You dont have to do that, it just pull out. I will admit though, that I did it that way the first time I removed my transmission.

So it can be taken out by just pulling?

Not trying to sound like a dick, but this is all in the TSRM and doing a clutch on an R154 has to be done EXACTLY as stated in the TSRM or it will fail...

Read the manual so you don't mess anything up.

i just had my r154 out a few months ago ... you have to make sure you take ALL the clutch cover bolts out through the check plate.... if you dont have ALL of them it wont work... and there is a bolt like up top of the starter that is a total bear to reach and take out make sure its out too you might have missed it ....im having the shop pull my tranny next time its a total pain if you dont have the right equipment... some of those bolts are like next to impossible!!
