I always change it if in doubt or when I dont know if/when it has been changed.

The easiest way to get out a pilot bearing is by packing the back of it with grease through the center hole. Get an object just a bit smaller than the pilot bearing center hole like a metal dowel, bolt, punch, 1/4 " drive extension, etc and put it in the hole. Tap it with a hammer.

You may have to put more grease in each time it moves a bit but it will come right out. Hydraulics man.

yep makes total sense and ive seen it done,

you will be cursing your self 5 months down the road in the summers heat when it start's whinning cause it was bad! lol

rule of thumb, if you dont want to have to do it a second time do it right the first.
then there's people like me, who know better but seem to like the enjoyment of taking it apart and slowly putting it back together..

I've also heard of the wet tissue trick. Same idea as the grease, it's just perhaps a bit more forceful, as the tissue is more of a solid than the grease.

if it isnt coming out with the grease trick then your punch is too thin or you do not have enough grease in it.

work in progress
punch was too thick at first, I couldn't get it to go in...and i'm having issues getting grease in, but I assure you that there was PLENTY in there, as in full

but, after several more hours of frustrating work on it i've decided to fvck it and tap the old bearing back in.
The pilot bearing is a very low-stress bearing anyways and should be fine, specially with all the extra grease packed in it now...

How do I get these f#$%# snaprings back on the damn throw-0ut bearing setup?!!! !!11!11!!BBQZ!!!!!

seriously... its very easy.. go to advance auto parts... rent their "slide hammer" and their "pilot bearing puller attachement" for the slide hammer... it will have two prongs...

one prong fits in the bearing so you just put one in the hole and angle it so it catches the lip...then one nice use of the slide hammer and its out.

EASIEST THING TO DO AND WORKS EVERYTIME.

I learned after tearing a knuckle open trying to get my turbo off the first time, that the right tools make life SOO MUCH FUCKING EASIER.

I now buy the tools I need.

Snap rings on the throwout bearing assembly? Easy, go pick yourself up some retaining ring pliers from Sears and be done with it. I had to do the screwdriver trick the first time and it SUUUUUUUUUUUCKED.

Worth the money even though I'll use it maybe once...

takes two seconds with the retaining ring pliers :biglaugh:

Getting it off with snapring pliers is... well it likes to break the snapring pliers :nono:

retaining ring pliers are made specificly to do it, and they wheren't that expensive...

crap, i wish i had known there was a better lower-shifter bushing... the green one i got from toyota is entirely too soft for it to seem like its going to last more than 10k miles. that Marlin one looks like delrin or teflon or something... or nylon even. i bet that thing would last a LONG time.
