Has anyone tried running no power steering?

My car lacks power steering right now, but my new rack and pump are in the basement. It's a pain in the ass pulling into/out of parking stalls. Especially in my friend's tiny apartment complexes.

damn, you all need to quit bitching. parking is easy, just back it in or pull through. driving at anything over 5mph is cakewalk

I drove my MK3 for a year w/o PS...even at speeds in excess of 240km/h.*

I wouldn't auto-x without it, though.

*This speed attained on a private closed circuit track with proper safety gear.

I'm running without it now. A bitch to park, but you get used to it. Driving normally isnt that hard at all. Just need to muscle it around when trying to park. I can't wait til I have power steering and A/C again, lol. I'm all about creature comforts.

My buddy had no PS in his supra.. was easy to drive above 10-15 mph...

I would switch to a manual rack though. I heard the 5.0 Mustang racks work?

New idea....

was thinking of just looping the toyota rack or maybe the ford conversion but......

Bright IDEA alert

SW20 MR2's actually have a 12V pump to move the fluid. No engine mounted pump, no brackets, no pulleys, no belt :)

Just set-up a high current relay and breaker and let er go.

The MR2 itself actually has a steering sensor and little pump ecu too to turn it on full pressure only when need be.

I just want the cleanest and most simple engine possible, and power steering is a thorn in my ass

I have no PS, I can't really complain.

Like the others said, low speed and parking is a little difficult for the first couple months (you get used to it).

It feels fine at higher speeds, but I don't try to make the car handle... if I were it would REALLY suck.

gross...why remove power steering?

I've driven a couple supras without power steering (including my own) and it sucks.

yep, once again guys, remember this is a GT car, not a race car. why give up parking lot and low speed luxury for a few pounds?

go on a diet.

a 3200 lbs car will ahve the mechanical advantage on a non-powered, power steering rack.

What this means is if you loose control. You could be the hulk, don't matter. You are getting the wheel yanked from your hands.

Listen to this man, I spun out on the highway in a storm and I couldn't get a grip on the steering wheel for way too long. I'm getting my power steering back as soon as I can.

buddy has his removed, but looped the in and out at the rack to keep fluid in it. i drove it, and thought it felt awesome. it was easy to drive and had some actual road feel while driving. slow speed driving was fine, and i did turn around in a parking lot to park. it did take a little effort, but mostly because i was used to zero effort. it wasnt hard, not any more so than other manual racks.

would i take out my working ps? no

but if my rack gave out, id either loop it like he did or get a mustang rack (better ratio for manual).

You guys need to go to the gym if you think the Supra is hard to turn without ps. :3d_frown: (I have had mine off for a few years now)

Figgie: I have gone all over the road in my Supra.. sideways and such and it is much easier to control IMO. When I did the SCC shootout for the mag, the pro driver even said he liked it better.. These are just 2 opinions though ;)
