Has anyone tried a mercedes steering damper vs an OEM one?

Steering dampeners won't push back from being compressed (that would make the car want to steer in the direction of the shock's extension). Try pulling it in and out fast, that's how it works.

Tires can make the car squirrely too. When I switched to a lower profile setup the car became much more sensitive to road conditions, especially under hard braking.

"loose" is subjective. It's a dampener, grab both ends and try to compress and extend it rapidly. The engine dampener works the same way.
