I just looked at a picture of a 1g-gte and the intake manifiold looks similar to a 7m. Has anyone thought of using the upper intake pipe off a 1g instead of running a ffim. So this way you could run a front mount without all of the extra piping.

i have thought about it and want to do it, but just try and find a 1g manifold by itself.

I think it could work. With what poodles said you might have to do the 2j coil pack conversion but the alt shouldn't get in the way. One of you Aussie guys have to try this cause us yanks woulnt come across a 1g in our lives.

Are there any pics? I understand that it isn't the best flow, but it's got to be better than running all of that extra pipe if you don't get a spearco or replica intercooler.

Not really more piping and it's the tight bends that's the issue... Stolen from another thread

Yeah, I see what you mean, but I think you need to see the 1g pipe it is fairly flat and I think would work much better than that example and have less bends than that example as well. There is a reason why Toyota did it that way.

I've seen the 1G pipes in person no way known will they flow enough for a 7M....:nono:

Toyota did it that way because they had no plan of running a front mount air to air intercooler. The first 1ggtes had a top mount air to water intercooler. When Toyota decided to to use an air to air intercooler instead, They were more concerned about not making the engine any taller than flow. They made the pipes flat because a 1g doesn't require much air flow.

If you ran the pipe like the one in the picture it should make some gains. You would still have to lower the alternator and move the ignition coils, but least you could keep the factory intake manifold. I wouldn't do that if you don't use a CT-26 style turbo following the factory path downward and I would add some kind of heat shield and/or wrap where the intake pipe runs over the top of the engine.

I've always wondered if Toyota had originally planned to make the 7mgte with an air to water intercooler or to run an intake pipe similar to the 1G as well. I can't imagine any engineer designing the factory route from scratch and thinking that running a pipe all the way to the front of the car to cool it just to come all the way back directly over the top of the turbo was a good idea.

This is one of the reasons many folks think the turbo was added on as an afterthought due to poor initial reviews of the Mk3.

Wow people are actually talking about the 1G-GTE. I personally own one... It is something different and I didn't know what I was getting into when I bought it. I don't have any pictures of the engine at the moment... But to Flateric... I am in Edmonton if you would like to see one in person then by all means you're only three hours away.
