Has anyone heard of an "X-brace" for the mk3?

you mean in the same place the STOCK brace is?

There is a nice large brace (that my dumb ass hasn't put back in cause I hurt my back changing my clutch) that goes in the same area about...

Honestly IJ, the only brace I might consider would be one that stopped the flex with the top off, but I've hit corners HARD with the top off and it actually seems to handle BETTER with some chassis flex...

Though I do like braces, they will win shows...

Wow You guys are up late! Well my buddy told me his friend that had the brace moved to texas and wrecked the car in a drag race 2 years ago. Said he now has a mk4 with 650whp and that the brace was mainly to eleminate flex for better launches at the track. It was box tube running front to back and then FL to RR and FR to LR. Basicly it just tied the subframes together via the factory bolt holes with longer high grade bolts. Wouldn't a roll cage be a better investment than that? Also stated that he wants another mk3 :biglaugh:

I don't know if I would say better, but I have to agree that once it loads up it still corners reasonably with the targa off.

how about where the drive shaft will fit with an X brace under the car?
don't know! one of the reasons i wanted to see it. But it seems nobody has a pic of one.....most never even heard of one....And my source that told me about it admits he never got under that car to see it:runaway:

driveshaft will fit, but removing it, ect is gonna be a bitch...

the X-brace would have to be removable, and anyone that knows anything about subframe connectors will tell you that they need to be welded in to really work.

Our cars aren't weak in any way shape or form. We're just as strong as the MKIV's and look at how fast they run without braces...

and for targa issues just get a targa brace that bolts into targa location, they can be fabbed up easily and cheaply depending on design and material. A steel X targa brace i couldnt see materials costing more then 20-30 dollars, then you just need someone who knows how to measure and weld.

know what would be the STRONGEST mk3 w/o aftermarket braces and cages?

buy a targa car and buy the factory sheet metal to weld a hard top back onto it. some of the mkiv guys have been doing that for race purposes. i like my targa too much to ruin it like that... but for the next mk3 project, its gonna have to be a hard top, to be historically accurate.

If I ever get around to doing body work this is exactly what I'll be doing :)
