Has anyone else had a KOYO radiator fail?

Paint in this case = bodywork ;)

The problem is bad grounds and if they painted under the ground terminals that is a bad ground :)

I spent a week going through my car after a chat with a rad shop owner here and him showing me a 2 week old Rad that looked like a garden sprinkler!

The material in the tube is only 20 thou thick so it doesn't take long to errode to a leak.

I got into a huge argument with some of the Older members at SF that should have known better and I walked away from the online Supra world for a few years in disgust.

I'd hate know that it WAS a bad ground that caused me to buy a $350 radiator. Then again, I would like to know....

if it was tap water, yeah, that would probably be why.

if it was distilled water, the problem was elsewhere. (distilled water = non-conductive)

As people that tried immersion of computers in distilled water, it doesn't stay pure and non-conductive for long...

Using just water is plain idiotic, as it's not supplying any lubrication to the water pump, or any protection to the seals. Not to mention the erosion and larger temperature range (coolant raises the boiling point and lowers the freezing point).

Also, when in doubt, replace. This goes for a hell of a lot on a car (oil, coolant, tires...)

A good place to start "fixing" it is if the car has had any body work done check the grounds in that area.

Anytime I come across a grounding wire I go ahead and take it apart, clean both surfaces up with a bit of steel wool, and put it back together snug. I did that to a ground I found under the console and my rear wiper started working :dunno: When Alan tied a loose ground back up under the tranny, the engine ran better. Not that it was bad before, but it made a difference.

All I can say is checking the grounds pleases the Supra gods. They will reward you.

I noticed a few pinhole leaks in the same areas on my Koyo rad. When taking the top mounting brackets off, it seems that the rubber insulator isn't thick enough to prevent the bottom corners of the metal brackets from touching the rad, grounding it electrically.

For those of you running these radiators, be sure to check this. I ended up filing the bracket corners down a bit, then cut some pieces of thick bicycle inner tube to add some more rubber in between.

After a few weeks of use, my JVT aluminum just sprung a big-@$$ leak, near the center of the lower tank.... Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu

Curious if having the fans/brackets fastened up to it, gave it enough ground, etc, etc, etc.

What a PITA!!! Luckily, still have the generic OEM replacement (less than a year old) sitting in the garage. It'll get me by for a bit. Guess I have a bit more to learn 'bout 'luminum radiators.
