My friend and I are considering doing this, we don't have a car yet but we're looking around.

For those that don't know and are curious, the rules are basically that you have a budget of 500 dollars to get a car, upgrade it, and race it. Doesn't include safety gear, and you can sell parts to make back towards the 500. Teams can be from 4 to 6 people, so costs would be split up.

I'm trying to get perspective on this and see if its at all a good idea for a college student like me to even think about doing....

I really want to, but I dont know what i'd be getting into really....and was wondering if anyone here might know. :icon_bigg

i can see a lot of long nights staying up to finish the car in your future if you do go through with it.

in all honesty i'd do it if i was closer to you, and if i wasnt starting school....

what kind of car are you thinking about??

BAHAHA great responces guys! haha...

well we're thinking of a 280zx if we can get it. or a wrecked MR2.

can someone tell me how fixable this MR2 looks? I am not familliar enough to know how that looks as far as frame and steering damage. it's 200 dollars...1985. We are willing to work on it and possibly get 50-70 percent discount on parts, but only if its worthwhile. engine has 80k on a rebuild hence my interest...it looks clean aside from the smashup;

this is the 280zx my bud is really wanting but cant contact the owner, it runs, has an electrical short in the dash (whatever) 300 dollars;

another 500 dollar mr2 with a bad fuel pump, looks like poop:

another is this car, a suzuki esteem...no details just that it runs and "drives" but it's FREE so we're thinking if its possible. i dont know jack about them though so i'm doubtful.... ANYBODY have any thoughts on these cars or this freebie?

I'd get some piece of crap with a V8 in it and strip the shit out of it, scrap everything for extra cash and you win

You're forgetting that the 24 hours of lemons is half demolition durby...

An MR2 would get SMASHED... but as the vitals are fairly well protected it might be interesting...

It's actually said in the rules that it's not a contact race, it will happen, but there are VW golfs that enter too...and miatas. if you screw around and hit people you're penalized and/or kicked out. I saw a picture of one racer who was driving rough. As punishment they welded a spike bar to his radiator so if he should keep bumping people....he'd be screwed.

so in the long run, should i really worry? any car can get smashed, and if voted, you car might get crushed by a backhoe halfway through the race via popular vote.. you have about 10 minutes to get any safety equipment and other valuable things from the inside before it gets demolished. the car WILL get destroyed nomatter what it is.

granted, the light MR2 might take a beating more than a larger car...

I DD a 280ZX.

It's faster than a NA MK2 and MK3.

It hauls ass. :)

Can take a hit too.

A friend of mine has done it, and loved it.

We wanted to do it this year with a CRX.

I did the first one a couple of years ago with a friend and his dad. We used an 80 something olds Delta 88. Took 4th of 9 lol.

My recommendations. No MR2, Its a cheap agile car, but they are shit, they are very flimsy and a LOT can go wrong. Z car is a good choice, epically a shitty 280ZX

I would run the suzuki to be honest, throw some junkyard wheels and tires on, and put coolant in it and bash the fuck out of it,

I'd like to put together a team for the South East event for next year.

We could find a 7M-GE powered MKIII for under $500. Just torque down the head and drive the ass off it.

We could call the team SupraMainacs. ;)

A local tuning shop that I frequent built two cars for some Toyota guys, who were participating in the race.
Anyway, one was an old FX16 corolla that another Toyota employee had sitting in his back yard, and the other was an old ST18X celica, which I never saw. The corolla was gutted, had some nice and tires, really nice brakes, and an awesome roll cage/harness bar done by the owner of the shop. Since all that is considered safety equipment, they spent a little on all of it.

It's cool though, and it would be awesome to do something like that.
