Hard to start, leaks gas like crazy!

i just got my car back from a swap this week.(just a lower mileage jdm 7mgte) and when i first got it it ran great. the more i drove it the harder it was to start and i noticed i could smell fuel. heres what it does:

when the motor is cold it is hard to start. it turns over quite a few times and i have to pump the throttle. once it starts it idles rough for about 30 secs. during slow acceleration with the cold motor i can feel it hesitating or slightly stuttering. once it is warm it is fine. i can also smell gas after i start it and while it is running and after i shut it off.

when i shut the motor off and pop the hood i can hear a little gurgling sorta hissing sound coming from the fuel rail area of the motor.

dont worry, i have stopped driving it until it is fixed! i noticed a trail of gas following me:aigo: and a puddle under my motor when i park.

im thinking a cold start injector is leaking? i have no idea. i dont even know where it is to look to see if it is leaking haha. help!

Dude- Check where the fuel line banjo's into the connector down by the driver's side engine mount. I left mine loose and made a puddle after my engine swap. Then I found the fuel line was loose up where the fuel pulsation dampner banjo's in.
I'm an idiot.

fire it up and take a look around the fuel rail and j tube. just has something ready if your ride tries for bbq mode.

There's a pair of copper crush washers on each side of the banjo fittings...you should not re-use these. I would check to make sure they are there and make sure the bolts are tight as previously suggested. Do NOT run the car till you do!

seen a fpr leak from re-using crush washers. just go through everything that involves fuel pressure.

Hey JDub, do you think he would be safe pressurizing the system using the fuel pump pressure test jumper? It won't show if he has a pinched injector o-ring but it may be enough to show his leak without firing up the ignition around raw fuel. If so I have the link ready to post.

That should be alright to do. Running a motor with a fuel leak though is asking for a weenie roast ;)

haha thanks guys. it is late so i will try this stuff tomorrow and let you know what is up. i dont think i left anything unhooked after the swap though, because it slowly started happening. right after the swap it was fine.

there is a much easier way to find the leak..... just take a match or lighter, and hold it up to any fuel line or fitting. which ever one catches fire, it the one in question.

but really, recheck tank to fuel rail, injector orings, insulators, and csi lines. if you didnt replace the copper orings when you did the swap (make sure you torqued to the specified values), then i would recommend that you do.

ok so i dont have an sst (maybe i do if i knew what that is:3d_frown:) but anyhow, i got a fire extinguisher and starter her up for a few seconds. i snapped some pics when i shut it off.

it hadnt ran for 48hours so all these parts were dry before i started the car. the car ran for about 5 seconds before i shut it off and i could not tell where the leak was coming from because all i could see was spraying gas!! it is somewhere in here though:

and if you cant tell, this is right under the intake manifold:

Like the man said, run the fuel pump with a jumper on the diagnostic block. You don't need an SST. Just a jumper that will fit...a paper clip will work...might need to flatten the ends a little. This will show you the leak.

From your picture, I would suspect the hose that connects the hard line from FPR to the J-tube (center of your pic). Here is a breakdown of the fuel lines for reference. Good luck.

You might want to recheck your injector o-rings that seal them into the fuel rail. Shortly after I installed my 550's (drove like 70 miles!! I lucked out!!) I sprung a leak in one injector, and another o-ring was bad. That probably what I get for trying to squeeze them in with the intake manifold still installed. I started squirting fuel upon restart, shut it off, checked my fuel hoses, started it up, saw squirting fuel with hood open, shut it off, ran to 2 checkers, 4 autozones, and finally found rebuild kits for the 7mgte injector. PITA but everything is good now.
So...
1) Check your connections, into, out of, your fuel rail. Washers and correct tq. of bolts.
2) Check your injector seals. (into fuel rail, and into the block)
Good luck

yeah so i havnt had much time lately, but im gonna try to tackle this today.

a closer investigation revealed the source to be coming from my fuel rail.... but when i first jump the fuel pump it sounds like it is coming from above, but then a few seconds later it sounds like the leak moves to below the fuel rail.

anyhow, i cant get a real good look at it because of intake manifold/throttle bodie is in the way so i was wondering

to get to the fuel rail can i just take off the 3000 pipe and the throttle bodies? or should i remove the entire intake manifold? because that is def a lot more in depth.

i will also need new gaskets etc for the throttle body correct? are they hard to get ahold of or is there a chance that advanced auto parts might have them? jw, cause i dont know if im gonna have to wait another week to get these gaskets just to put the thing back together.
