Well it seems either the pump or the ps rack is going out. (maybe both) when the car is stopped and at idle it is very difficult to turn the steering wheel. Also there is a squeeling sound when trying to turn the wheel. The sound is exactly the same sound you get when you turn the wheel all the way to the end lock then hold pressure against the lock. Hope that is a clear description. What sould I look into first, the pump or the rack?

Have you changed the steering fluid i would at least check that first. My steering is a little stiffer when idling aswell but i dont recall hearing anything like you described

Check both then get back to us. It should make a "pshhhh" noise at full lock, if you're getting a squeal then the belt is must likely slipping.

the belt is tight and fluid level is perfect with no foam at all. the sound only occurrs when trying to turn the wheel in either direction, with hands off the wheel.... no noise.
