I took it to the "catastrophe center" today and Progressive did the estimate. After some discussion about leaving some of the damage off the estimate to prevent the car from being "totaled", I ended up with a car that doesn't have an R-title, and a check for $2200. If I had nice paint or had bought all new trim for the car when I put it together I would be pissed, but since I have less than $600 in the body work, and can fix the dings myself for less than $100, I'm pretty happy.
The guy was trying to tell me that if the car was totaled I would lose out on alot of money if I tried to buy the car back for salvage. He said they don't just do scrap value (~$600) on older cars anymore, they put them up for bid to determine salvage value, and that because it's a supra they would probably bid about $2K or more for it. I don't know about that one... but I'd rather not take the chance anyway. They were only giving me $3500 for it (after my deductible... only $3K). So assuming a minimum $600 salvage value... the extra couple hundred is worth not having an R-title or ending up with a dented up car and little or no money.
That being said... I'm switching the car over to some sort of collector car insurance that has a pre-stated value before I put any more money into it. All I need to do is get my beater car on the road (that's all Hagerty requires, is that you have another registered and insured "normal" car for DD). Better coverage for the same $... can't beat it.
Meanwhile....
Our mazdaspeed3 was estimated at $3500 in damage... but I think it's going to go over that when the work actually gets done. We're looking around for a good body shop that still has a low enough labor rate for progressive to pay for. We have to fix that car because we still owe $13K on it, and the check is written out to the bank. I'm hoping everything goes smooth with the repairs, but if not I'll just be looking for a new insurance company for that car too.
Now to deal with the dented up house....
