Well, I don't do that anymore. I quit doing that years ago. I had a very close call and took it as a sign so from then on I stopped driving after I had been drinking. I was far less responsible as a 21-year old than I am now.

I was completely hammered one night back when I was 22. I could barely walk straight. Around 2 am I got in my old truck to drive back to my place and got pulled over. I knew at that moment my life was over. I rolled down the window and as I waited for the cop to walk to the window for my license and registration, my mind was racing and my adrenaline was going like crazy. When he finally got to the window and shined his 4 cell maglight in my face, he just said, "Oh, you're not who we're looking for. Sorry about that! Have a nice night!" I waited for him to drive past me before I even allowed myself to breathe again. I stopped drinking and driving after that event. I figured it was some sort of sign, like a get out of jail free card.

In the late 70's we all drove drunk in our teens... but there was maybe 10 cars on the road with us. Now, there are 100's, so there is no way I would try any of the stupid stuff I did as a teenager. Its far far too likely that your going to make a mistake and kill someone if not yourself.

I don't personally give 2 shits if you kill yourself while drinking and driving. But if you kill someone I know and you survive it'll be a temporary thing. Pet peeve. DWI is attempted murder as far as I'm concerned.

It's all good dude. I wasn't trying to get on your ass about it. I do like what Grant said though. There is a definite advantage to being an old guy. I wish I was born a couple decades before I was. My wife's parents have a magnet on their fridge that says "I may be old, but at least I got to see all the good bands." There is a definite amount of truth to that statement. It seems like the amount of things that you can do for cheap or free is rapidly declining as well due to increased regulations and the general 'ban on fun'.

Differences between then and now are quite staggering really.

I have 6 kids and due to my falling under the global media spell, I ended up stupidly raising them with more and more fear (my fear). Fear of them being run over, kidnapped, sexually abused, shot, knifed, or beat up by the neighbors. That's generally what happens when "if it bleeds it leads" media saturates the masses.

I didn't know what divorce, pedophiles, gun crazed students, etc... Were when I grew up. We didn't watch more than 4-5 hours of television each week. We definitely didn't focus on terrorists, although we feared the impending nuclear strikes.

I grew up with a hoards of kids my age amd we were never indoors. My parents never told me when to come home, I instinctively knew when to. My teen years is when the new reality started to creep in via saturated media. But drinking and driving from 17-21 was a normal event, I got drove home by the police 7 times in my reign and never came close to an accident. It wasn't until I was 18 that I lost a friend due to their booze soaked driver rolling a jeep that I considered it possibly dangerous. Them miss Teen Canada's brothers got killed in a alcohol related car rollover, and I knew them personally. That's when it started coming home that it was a very bad thing. I almost quit drinking totally because even today if I drink, I drive. So, no drinking... No worries. It works for me.

But you younger people did miss out on a very worry free, no internet, no saturated media influence period.

I don't drink and drive!! I won't let anyone I know do it either. Ask vin about that one night lol. I have a video :3 school shooting just seems normal to me IMHO. I don't know what I missed because I was never around. I still have enough fun though indoors or outdoors.

Yeah. I agree that many things have gotten worse, but then again many things have gotten better as well. The internet has brought forth a vast amount of information. It is because of the internet that I was able to take on many of the projects I have been able to with my various vehicles. This digidash project for one could not have come about without the interwebs. With anything though, there is good and bad. I almost wish we could go back the the news that existed during WWII. Occasionally I'll spend an hour on youtube watching the old Private Snafu cartoons they would show the GI's back then. Those cartoons didn't try to talk about fear or anything like that. It was more of a take pride in what you do sort of approach. Having been in the Navy over 9 years, the training we get now is poles apart from what was given 70 years ago, and far less interesting. It is mainly powerpoint based and when it isn't lulling us to sleep, it is trying to capitalize on our fears. I agree with you that we are slowly becoming a fear based society. We need to become an empowered society with the mindset that the harder things get, the harder we work.
