So about twenty minutes ago I was lying in bed throughly enjoying my sleep when my cell rings (btw it is about 8:20 so not that early). I answer and the call center from VISA is on the line and he tells me "we are calling to inform you that your card has been comprimised" well I am like WTF because I still have my card, infact I go and pull the card out of my wallet to make sure.

From what they were saying, somehow someone got my number in the states and charged $1.55 to it. VISA realised that is was not me and that is didnt seem correct so they cancelled the card, removed (or going to remove) the charge and are in the process of sending me a new card.

Well needless to say I was kinda blown away but very impressed with VISA and their service. They unfortunately phoned my grandmother first (because that is where the card is resgistered) making her think that I had way too much on the card even though I just paid it all off, probably because they simply asked for me and didnt tell her anything.(sometimes being a university student makes people think I dont know how to handle money). I just wanted to share this because I thought I was very careful with my card and information but obviously the number was taken at somepoint in time. So be extra careful.

Cliff notes: card number got stolen, still have the physical card, VISA phoned, grandmother worried, problem sloved and get a VISA for their awesome service.

Why would they charge $1.55 either way that sucks wonder how they got a hold of it.

They said that the $1.55 charge was like a test charge to see if it worked. They said they could have got the number from a database or a random number generator. The only thing I have ever used my card for on the internet was to buy car parts or check up on it on line. I think i will just use other means to do that now.

Theresa got hit like that last year. I think it was Yahoo Voice charges or something like that. All a dollar and change.

It's usually people using random card number generators. That's why they get caught so easily. They don't have your other information.

Not using your card on the Internet won't necessarily make you safer.

Yep - same thing happen to me 3 weeks ago. They replicated my card and were using it around Phoenix...charged stuff like fast food, gas, etc. Tried some really big purchases, but the name on the card they made didn't match. Visa called me too and canceled all of them ;)

At best buy a month ago someone came in a tried to buy a 3000 dollar camera with a credit card, the card wouldn't register, so we brought over a manager to allow us to do it by hand when the dude started to freak out. He said, "no, no, no. Thats cool, I can come back and pay in cash. Just give me my card and I'll be on my way...." At this point we knew somethin was up and called the police. He kept insisting we just give him the card back. Our mangers stalled him long enough for the police to arrive and he left in cuffs.

I guess he had a warrant for theft and fraud in some other state, I think Kansas. Funnest day at Best Buy in quite a while.
