Grinding Crack Clacking Sound

Just as the title states, sorry i dont have anything to record the sound with.Ill do my best to describe

The sound seems to be coming from the front end of the car, noticbly louder with the hood up.It damn near sounds like rod knock but its not.The sound went away when reving the motor.

You can hear the grind,clacking noise @ idle. You can hear it grinding around untill about 70 in 5th and it goes away. Shifting also wasnt at its best it was pretty rough going into 5th.

Yesterday the cars fine and drives strong today, its making a grinding clacking noise, its harder to shift.The car was fine untill i went to class which is 55 miles or so, then after i noticed this noise.

Ive layed on the ground and checked and looked under the hood.Nothing looks out of place and theres nothing dripping.

I was thinking it was clutch/tranny related, or the crank pully. I know that drive in the water the other day is coming back to bite me in the ass

Just went out and listened to it again. When i fired it up sound fine, no noise,no clatter. So then i press the clutch in and shift through all the gears.It goes into each one fine.Now when i let off the the noise begins again.So this leaves me to believe that its something with the clutch/assembly is loose and or broke.

well you say its coming from the front end of the car, which the clutch obviously is not in.

Get a really long screwdriver, put your ear to one side, and the metal side to wherever you suspect the noise to be (engine block, timing cover, transmission, etc). See where the noise is loudest at

Good idea.

With the hood up,the sound is loudest by the back of the motor

My buddy came over and he looked her over, he's thinking it could be the pilot bearing in the clutch.So now where gonna go buy some ramps and roll the car up and he can have at it.

Just working out the bugs before the meet,i swear this car has a mind of its own sometimes

Update:

My buddy messed around with the clutch, we bled it, because the fluid looked funny,possibly diluted. The sound is defenetly in the clutch. So im dropping the car off so he can drop the tranny and check the clutch assembly. So within the next 24 hours i should know whats wrong with it exactly.

So the carrier bearing and/or ds u joints is the cause of your grinding crack clacking sound? How could reving or idling your engine have any affect on a problem in your drivetrain? Did you replace the pilot bearing in your clutch?

No, that was the first thing he checked once he dropped the tranny. He said everything in the clutch was ok.He said the grinding clacking sound was echoing which made it sound like it was coming from the front in the clutch assembly.Worst case scenario, im pricing a one piece aluminum drive shaft, so if my stock unit is done, upgrade is the only way to go

weird. every time I've had an issue with the DS or carrier bearing it was not a "clacking" noise, it was a deep dull thumping, or severe vibration (u joint)

I had highway speed vibration that came and went without any reason I could pinpoint, and I was convinced it was my carrier bearing. I replaced the bearing, and about a week later the damn vibration was back. The real problem was that my rear passenger side caliper was hanging up once in a while, and when it did the rotor would get nice and hot and the car would shake like crazy at speeds over 40 to 50 mph. New calipers fixed the vibration, completely. It might be worth checking yours out, just to make sure you've covered all possibilities...

That is a good thought.It could contribute as i do have Autozone brakes and rotors on, and right now every autozone part has broke already in just over 2 years. The slave cylinder is still working but the master cylinder is leaking again.:-(.Im going to have my buddy go thrrough it for me, this thing has to be running by the 14th no if ands or buts

Fuzz, if I had to guess I would say the bearing in one of your belt pulleys is going out. Take the belt off and spin each of the pulleys to see if one is grinding and/or hard to turn. Best guess, Id say it was the tensioner pulley.

3 weeks ago when my starter when out i bought my new one through o'reily's.Ive heard good thing about quality of parts compared to the "zone"

Thats a good suggestion.Ill have him check all the belts pullys, but as of now the drive shaft is at the specialist, they should be calling monday to let me know what they can do with the drive shaft.

good luck man.

i have a knocking noise that's intermittant....it goes away sometimes and if i hold the clutch pedal down it gets louder. makes me think my clutch has issues....

well it makes the noise when i'm not moving.....

i typed a q. asking about how much a new driveshaft costs....but i get a faster noise that couldnt be the driveshaft because my car doesnt have to move to hear this...

i thought it was rod knock but...it goes away sometimes! so....i dunno. i'm not worried about it....

i have wiggled my driveshaft because i've felt backlash though...i dont think i had any wiggling.... thanks though.
