I seem to remember it being said, that if it was not touching the gasket, it would be fine. Remember?

Then don't worry about it. As long as it's not on the sealing surface, the most you can say is that you have a potential hot spot there, if you decide to make 600+ rwhp.

I know this is an old thread, but just so you guys know what you're looking at if you think the machinist made that mark, it's called an inclusion, it's a flaw from the casting process where sand breaks off the mold and falls into the molten aluminum. Turn enough cast iron on a lathe and you learn pretty quickly how to identify these things.

Anyway, if you run across something like this in the future inside the combustion chamber, take a dremel sander or some paper and just smooth it out. This will keep the edges of the inclusion from becoming a hot spot leading to detonation, and will lessen the likelihood of the pit becoming a stress riser for cracks. A rough surface in this environment will also invite deposits.

If the inclusion is on a mating surface how you deal with it will depend on how important the seal is, how much stress the seal will be under and how much risk you're willing to take.

I would have the shop weld it and resurface... if not a new head should be in place. This is so close to the bored that with heat, stress, vibration can cause stress cracks and lead to some problems. A good possibility don't you think as this hole is a gap (air bubble)... and aluminum expands easier with heat. Just my 2 cents, and just cause the machinist say its ok doesn't mean it is.

its not a flaw and its not the machinist fault. its a pit. the metal corroded away in that spot. if it is inside the cc it wont affect anything. if you read what others said in this thread you would know that by now....

Yeah! So there! +1. Read and learn, or fail miserably. If anyone out there lives near the OP, go find him, and give him a slap, and tell him to just use the head. IT WILL WORK!:icon_bigg
