I have the hks super drager and it's really quiet even though the canister is probably one of the biggest around. It's almost too quiet lol. It kind of sounds stock but with a little of that deep rumble. It's quiet when you get on it too.
Good universal 3'' muffler?

if u want quiet but are willing to give up the "can-Style" muffler, go with a tanabe exhaust. nice and low at idle and low rpm driving. nice and mellow when at WOT.

what you need is a very large resonator, i got a 24"x4" resonator on my car and it made a world of improvement, full 3" exhaust is going to be loud no matter what you do but the resonator did help alot.
The HKS dragger is 3.3" and it's pretty damn quiet, I've heard a few, I think it has a pretty big resonator on it too...

Cool, I think I might go that route. Now here is a possibly dumb question. I'm not feeling too well and my brain is slow. But, could I put 2 of these back to back to make it even quieter without more restriction? These are just straight through and wouldn't restrict right? I run a Vibraint Ultra Quiet resonator & a MagnaFlow muffler. Quiet with a great tone, I love it...
If you like a nice deep low tone the Flowmaster 40 is about and low as it goes. No threat of sounding ricey in the least. It does NOT however look very "importy" (I know I just made that word up). As long as you are above 2k RPM it doesnt drone.
I would definately recommend AGAINST a single in dual out design. Everyone I've ever talked to describes the exact same "fwappy sound" (woot, two made up words in one post) at mid RPM range and its a very unpleasant sound.

My car had a 40 series flowmaster on it when I bought it - it was the worst sounding muffler I think I have ever heard - raspy, tinny, just sucked(know a ton of people that have them on small blocks - but w/o enough horsepower they sound shitty to me :dunno: )
On the other hand, I had a 3"in/dual 2.5" out magnaflow on a turbo 4cyl and it sounded sweet - very mellow at idle and gradually higher pitched as revs increased. Granted, this was a turbo 2.3 ford SOHC motor, not a 3.0 dohc I6 (not apples to apples)

Well certainly everyone has a different opinion of what sounds god but a description of how a muffler sounds should be similiar in similiar installations. So Im confused when you describe the sound of a flowmaster40. Anyone who has heard my car will agree that it in NO WAY sounds "tinny" or "raspy". Most people describe the sound of my car as "almost sounds like a V8" or "musclecar'ish".
As for the magnaflow I agree with the description. I loved how my NA sounded with it at low RPM and at WOT, but the mid range of the powerband it has an unusual quality to it that actually made the car sound like there was something wrong with it.
Meh, too each his own for sure, but its nearly impossible to compare the sound of a 7M or 1JZ to any other motor even if its the same muffler in each case. Different motors are going to sound different.
The problem with this thread is the op is asking a subjective question and the responces are going to be little more than personal opinions. I would say the only realistic way to get an idea of what you might like is to HEAR clips of different systems on a similiar platform (ie. "this is what a stock 1JZ with a Borla exhaust sounds like : LINKY")

agreed Pete. I just thought it was funny how we were on opposite ends of the spectrum about the same products. Just re-enforces the need for the video section (or just adding to 935's sound clip page).
On another note, I think the 'other' forum actually has something similar (for these same reasons). I'm rarely over there, but I will look for it next time around.
