Good Idea or Bad

What if you used a fuel-rated heavy duty flexible hose as the "filler neck", nickle fittings (IIRC, nickle doesn't spark), and design the filler end to break away from the housing behind the lisence plate in the event of a rear end collision... the flexible hose should crush, pinch, or otherwise hang free or flop around should you ever get hit, thus keeping the tank sealed in that area.

Just a thought.

I don't think anyone thinks it's a bad idea visually, the safety aspect is where everyone's concerns are bro.

^+1, however, if GM did it for X amount of years and had many cars that had fuel fills like this, it had to have been somewhat safe. I had a friend of mine get rear-ended in his Pontiac Parisienne (spelling) on the highway at 110 Km/H and all the happened was the chrome rear bumper got pushed in (it popped back out a day later lol) and the fuel fill neck got slightly kinked in one of the bends.

Even though GM did this for X ammount of years they got rid of it for a reason.
Just as the same as they used asbestos is insulation for X ammount of years... or how at one point smoking wasn't considered bad for you....

NTRA08,

If you want to do visual mods to your car, whatever floats your boat... My car doesn't exactly fit everyones cup of tea on here, but when it comes down to something that could be a safety issue it becomes a whole new story.

I would be rather pissed if I was sitting at a stop light and the person next to me had this done, gets rear ended, the fill pipe seperates from the tank, spills, ignites, and torches me in the process.

sorry, but I really think you should look at the safety concerns.

ya its not like the gas tank door is really that big of an eye sore. if the paints good and matches well like new you can hardly notice it.

I bet i'll be the only supra with it done. I do understand the safety concerns. I accept them too. I'll try to get it done before the end of next month. with pics of break done, fab, and finished product. I was thinking I could also make the liscence plate pop up with the stock lever. IDK

yes.... I did read that.... but did the other person that might happen to go up with him accept them too? You have to think about the other people you will be effecting along with that...

I'm sorry, but Ive been on SM for quite awhile now, although I don"t post much It really seems like people don't use their head that much anymore.

I'm not saying that it's the greatest thing to do, I personally wouldn't as I don't see a need for it, and as stated, you hardly notice the thing because it sits flush with the quarter panel.

However, with that being said, if he realizes the safety concern attached to the modification and accepts them, then all the power to him. It is in the end, his car.

Personally, IF and IF I were going to do so. I would install a one way valve from where the filler tube connects to the tank to prevent any gas from spilling out if an accident were to happen. I know that in some of the later year Caprices (my '95 and '96 both had them), GM had installed such a device as a countermeasure just incase you were rear ended so no gas would come spilling out. They also made the tube in such a way, that if you were rear ended, the tube would break on one of the bends as opposed to where it connected to the tank.

Just saying.

There's no problem trying new things. Hot rodders and any custom car builder do it all the time, and you don't see the general motorist population caring what they do as long as it looks good.

My Dad loved to point out when we went to car shows all the older cars with push button transmissions/pointy ass radio buttons/spiky buttons on the dashboard.

They were trying new things and it looked cool, until the driver or passenger ended up with a spike shaped hole in their forehead after an accident.

Honestly this mod can be done very safely. i find the paranoia on the subject with a lack of factual evidence to support the mass paranoia pretty disturbing. we aren't driving pintos here supras aren't going to burst into flames if rear ended. that being said as long as he puts the 1 way valve in there and secures the cell properly there should be no issue whatsoever if he gets rear ended.
pics????
