I use the generic pep boys Spectre filters and they have been great so far lol Just a basic cotton/steel mesh filter that looks nice and has always seemed to work for every vehicle I have. As far as filtration capability, I do not know the quality difference between this and any brand names...

You could drive a car for the next 10 years without a filter and never see a problem....doesn't mean it's good:)

the whole "I never had a problem" mentality has got to go...gets old reading that nonsense:-(

the only oil issue in the afm i've ever heard of is when people over oil it.

i believe what happens is alot of people tend to, maybe not on purpose but do

The main reason I don't like K&N is that they shrink/deform well before their million miles and it's NOT covered under their warranty.

Also, Spectre is actually trying to be taken seriously and their filters aren't THAT bad. The no-name filters on ebay are another story (someone on the forums had one collapse and get sucked into the turbo, major damage)

ive seen k&n's mess up many cars map sensors because its a oil filter. they dont filter too good either and when the oil hit the sensor the dirt get threw and stick to the sensor causing it to go wack.

Oh I know the 'never had a problem' mentality doesn't work very well. Been there.

But as far as Spectre filters go, they are pretty decent for $20. They seem to filter very nicely after inspecting the one I have, which has been around the block lol

ok now go look at the mkiv test results.

i could give microgiveashits about what someone did in a test. everything i speak here on the forums is either personal experience or have been involved in.

listen to me, or don't. show a test to prove me right, or prove me wrong. i was stating an opinion. take it fwiw.

I hope you weren't speaking in response to that test done on the filters... because that test proved epic failure on K&N's part.... :naughty:

So we agree that Apexi, Aem, Spectra, and K&N are good cone filters. All of these cone filters sound good and sound mean under the hood. Nobody mentioned the fact that they all suck hot air from the engine bay negating any performance boost...... IMHO

^k&n suck. spectra are decent for the price. apexi and aem dry flow are the best.

the fact with the hot air doesnt really matter as the air is going into a 1100+* turbo and then gets cooled in a intercooler.

Not so, IJ data logged with and without a CAI.

The only reason I run the apexi is becasue the factory airbox wouldn't fit with the cooleeze pipes.

I have to agree, the CAI does make a bit of a difference. I plan on running one once I get my MAFT system set up right. I see it as:

I would rather have 40 to 90-something degree air (depending on ambient) going in, rather than the hot air that is in the engine bay going in. Every little bit helps. But of course puddles then become a problem. My ex lost her MazdaSpeed3 to a puddle over the summer when she was washed over by a huge truck that displaced a lot of water on the other side of the road. Luckily Mazda apparently covers those things when it's caused by a MazdaSpeed performance part.

well if you think about it, the turbo is going to heat up the air X amount of degrees, the intercooler will cool it X amount of degrees, in the end you will still end up with hotter air if you bring in hotter air.
