Going to the Dyno for the first time and have questions.

I'm going to P.R.E. in Portland Feb. 20th. It will be 4 pulls. They will monitor HP, TQ, AFR, Knock, and I 'think' timing.

My questions are:

Should I do anything to prepare aside from the obvious, tire check, oil check, coolant check, etc...?

Should I pull from 3rd or 4th?

Given my mod list (in my sig) and 10psi, does anyone care to venture a guess as to what the car will put down? I will increase boost as much as possible before running leaner than 11.5.

I will post the dyno sheet when I get back!

Thanks everyone... :)

Hmm... Maybe he said Detonation, not knock. I don't remember those details. I know I wasn't sure on timing though. I was thinking of using a stop watch instead of a timing light. Will that work? :D

All I know is that I DON'T want to Detonate! Been there and done the BHG thing!! ;)

As someone who used to run a dyno professionally, I'll tell you here are the most important things:

1. Your car needs to be in top condition. There are few things harder on a car than pulling in 4th gear on a dyno. The airflow is never as good as it is on the road.

2. Fresh oil (see number one) you're going to abuse the piss out of it.

3. Full coolant with good hoses & belts (see number one again)

4. Good tires. I've had a tire or two blow on the dyno, and aside from scaring the living piss out of everyone, it can injure people and your car.

If there is anything about your car that doesn't feel right, lift off the fuel, dump the clutch and let the dyno operator stop the wheels.

If it is a dyno where you drive your own car, listen to the dyno operator, pay attention, turn off that fucking cellphone. (You'd be surprised how many times I've hit the dyno brake and told car owners that when they are done talking on the phone and are ready to pay attention that we can continue...)

Remember, your car "is what is is". Meaning they get a good, safe, usable tune on it, that is what the car makes. Don't shoot for some arbitrary number and then start fucking with the tune to try to reach it. I've seen more guys blow up perfectly good cars by tweaking timing, turning up boost, leaning out just a little more, all to reach some arbitrary number.

PS - if you ever do "make a mess" on the dyno, offer to mop it up, we really hate cleaning up after you... ;)

Thanks IJ and Supracentral!

Yeah, fresh oil and filter were on my list of to do's.

One more thing I'll do is put my Walbro and new fuel filter in. Just to make sure I have adequate fuel supply in the event that he tells me I have room to turn up the boost.

I'm not shooting for a number at all. I just want to get a base-line with it the way it is, then see what it does after I put my 550's, Maft Pro, and JT61GT in.

I'm pretty excited; but, at the same time...nervous. I guess that's normal...
