Going to buy a turbo! need advice.

Welp I've got money now, and my grades in school are great. So its time for more supra and I've found 2 Turbos targas today and will probably go look at them and buy one of them buy the end of this week.
SO! My question is what should I ask besides, the usual crap? Im no idiot to cars, but when it comes to turbos, Im sorta lost. Thats why I wanna buy a turbo more or less for learning the engine ect.

I may just buy one and swap the eninge into my 87 NA, just because the I dont know what the 2 cars look like, and they are both targas, NA = Hardtop FTW. then part out the shell!

Well. besides which one is cleaner inside and outside..

Pull off the accordian hose that attatches to the turbo and look for and oil residue. Also move the shaft back and forth and up and down to see how much play there is. A new one has none. Check the oil, does it smell burnt? Does he have receipts for parts he replaced, etc?..

When you buy this car, put yourself in the mindset that you ARE going with a MHG. Don't even consider buying it if you plan on running it with whats in there!

Pull the motor, disassemble, send to machine shop and have them surface the block and head, buy a MHG and reassemble. Don't get rod knock!

91 ftw! (thats if its clean)

make sure there is no blown turbo seals, no whinning noises when it spools. make sure there is a nice clean boost. its the basics of turboz. :runaway:

JoeC: yes MHG, will be the 1st thing to be done to it, unless they have already done it, which i doubt they have.


SSK: what do you mean no whining noise? like a squeal or a PSP going out whine?

Pics Of the 88 are posted, and its got a nice ding in the side of it.
Ima offer him 900 for it.
dunno bout the 91 yet.

hmmm, a '91 turbo with the 5-speed for only $1100? sounds to good to be true, or it must have some damage or high miles. the '88 needs a fender... take pix of the '91 when you go look at it.

shipping is a pain in the ass. I've looked into that. Local is good.
Buy something 2000miles away is bad.

and the 91 is 1100 obo.

Welp, Called about the 91, Its got BHG, and it was going to be his project car, gonna call about the 88 in a little bit.

AGGGG!! My Karma Sucks, the 91 when I called someone was looking at it, and well I told him to call me back if they bought it or not, and well he called me back, and they sold it....:( My luck blows.

LOL, well it was like the perfect project turbo for me, BHG, cheap, and a whole car.
sigh....maybe the 88 will work for me.
