Going 1JZ in my 89

The OTHER White Meat.
Yeah, I sure am. After writing numbers down and studying "the bottom line," I decided I can get cheaper, more reliable, and more efficient power out of a 1JZ. Any tips/hints/suggestions for me? Total 1JZ noob here. Eventual plans include a 1.5JZ. For now, however, I'd like to be back on the road (tearing it up) as quickly as possible. Thanks!

All I can suggest after doing my swap is if you take your time and not take shortcuts along with getting the motor from a rep. dealer like Driftmotion or Jarco then you will be happy.:icon_razz

JHOT has been good to me so far, and their prices are more than fair. the only thing is that you would have to get a hydrofan assembly, a clutch fan assembly (soarer and i think aristo or chaser) or go to hydrofan.

What, if any, body to chassis harness issues will I incur? Is there a pre-made harness from one of the vendors that will solve any issues? Need to know what I'm getting myself into. I already know about having to extend the harness, that's no problem. I can cut and solder wires all day if I have to. May start to hurt my eyes after a while, but I digress. Any help is appreciated in advance!

yea shortcuts always bite you in the ass later..

jza70 front clip by jza70 clip pics before swap so u remember where everything goes
stinger ems ftw!!!
new ehaust downpie back or y pipe if u dont already have
intake pipe
use hydrofan
dont cut corners
1jz-gte.us for wiring if needed
samco radiator hoses
power steering hose from driftmotion
lsd if u dont have
ac hoses are hard (kind of)
replace things that are looking bad once in engine bay
repair any rust or bad paint in engine bay clean also

all i can remember and a good friend when pulling and installing motor and when u work it always helps

good luck !! enjoy!!!

I've already looked into the PS lines from DM. . .I have my stock 3.73 LSD back there for now, eventually I'll rebuild the 4.10 Torsen. Might even throw the Torsen on my 3.73 ring gear, if that works. Will run stock ECU for now, when I install the 2j bottom end I'll go AEM.

I'm also going to repaint my engine bay and fill in any captivated nut holes that I don't think I'll use. Will have to double-check for where the hydro-fan reservoir mounts.

Glad to see you move to a 1JZ you wont regret it.
There is some shortcuts you can take that dont compromise your cars performance and maybe safer like the install of the harness with out hacking it.
You may want to upgrade to a chinaman "Y" pipe before putting the engine in the car if your keeping twins you can find it pretty cheap since alot of performance buffs eventualy move onto a single turbo.

As for the LSD down the road you may want a little shorter of a final like the 3.9 4.3 depends on taste everyones is diffrent.
The torsen diff parts on the 4.1 dont go into the US LSD because the half shafts and parts are diffrent.

The exception being aftermarket LSDs they use the US half shafts

Evil: I was asking if I can put my 3.73 ring gear on the torsen chunk and use my halfshafts. I already have the stock clutch-type 3.73 LSD but like how the Torsen works. Or should I just slap the whole Torsen differential onto my subframe (and bolt up the USDM halfshafts?)? LMK.

How can I install the harness without hacking it up? That would put the ECM basically behind the radio, right?

I plan on running the ZWMotorsports y- and downpipe setup for now, then when I go big single, I'll run their manifold/downpipe setup.

i dont think the 3.73 R&P fits in the torsen rear end. and i dont believe the axles from the US matches to the Torsen either.

^^ exactly what the reaper said!
That is 100% correct do not use the torsen unless you plan to drift only
The Soapra have gone through 3 of them as once reported by Jose.

You keep the exsisting harness unhacked by making the speedo hole larger anything from 2" - 2 1/2" is perfect. break the plastic harness guide or cut it the guide on the back of the plenum that drives the harness upwards.

You put the engine in then pull the harness streight in the car gently and route it behind the radio to the glove box then you mount your ECU in the glove box area but instead of facing it to the front of the car you face it to the driverside of the car by switching brackets around and sides they are on.

ECU mounts in factory location the wires reach!
You attach your small 2 wire connector going to the heater control switch to you jumper harness and the you run that out your old efi through hole.

This will save you 2-4 weeks of harness splicing.

I want us to see your car on the road sooner and with out a flaw in your EFI harness. Not to mention the days of work you save by simply pullying the wires in through there.
