LOL, I knew somebody would do it sooner or later. Those 4200s are just screaming for a big turbo to be bolted on. Good luck cramming one in a Supra though...

Is this a 4.2 liter inline 6?

Yep, and it's arguably the most advanced engine in GM's parts bin. A 4 valve/cyl, pent roof DOHC with VVT on the exhaust side, over 90% of it's peak torque available from 1600 RPM on and a 10:1 compression ratio that's 87 octane friendly. I'm a pretty big fan of this engine if you couldn't tell. I want to see GM bump the compression, swap the cams and drop this engine into a 2800lb RWD 2 door. But I think GM has its heart set on making boring cars instead...

There was a concept that had a twin turbo on the 4.2L that was just awesome! The rumor was that it would be the Syclone/Typhoon reborn, but alas it was not to be...boring cars it is.

over 90% of it's peak torque available from 1600 RPM? Really? Man I drove a envoy, and it had nothing down low, you really had to rev it out to get the thing to move. But, it sounds like a badass engine, and it doesnt sound like anything gm would make. Actually, I would not say it is there best engine though, maybe best besides Cadillac's Northstars, and that 3.6L V6 they put in the CTS. Those are all great engines.

If you are going to or did put it in your car that would be one thing,
if you just want to talk about it & it is not in a Supra, then I have to put this in OT.

The GM I6 can and is being used in race trucks. It's also capable of about 5L of displacement.... :)

Imagine a nice 5.0 I6 in the supra with twin GT35's on there.... You'd need AWD just to lay down the power for sure.

GM should offer this motor in the GTO with a nice midsize single turbo, about 550hp at the wheels, and a price tag that is on par with the V8 version. Perhaps they'd actually sell a few GTO's that way. (Amazing as that would be for GM to sell cars to anyone other than rental car companies, or truck buyers.)

GM hasn't been too enthusiastic about turbochargers lately. They've been targeting a 200,000 mile average life expectancy for all major engine components and it seems there aren't any tubos that can meet that standard and not cost more than the rest of the car. They may give in but, I kinda doubt it. The Duramax is the one glaring exception to this rule but, it absolutely had to be turbocharged to compete in its class.

A turbocharged 4200 would be awesome but I'd be perfectly happy if GM just bumped the compression and swapped the cams. Back it with the torque tube/rear mounted T56 from the vette and put it in a light weight 2+2. Give it a base price under $25K and don't call it a Camaro.

you know how many mullets would flip out if a camaro came with one of those "japanese turbo things" on it
