I would assume the way each pipe is bent will affect its acoustics.

Maybe it would be helpfull if I listed my exhaust

Starting with the Turbos

Stock Y pipe->HKS Down pipe->gutted cat->custom mandrel bent 3 inch exhaust to a HKS Carbon Ti.

Now from what I have heard, HKS's exhausts are usually rather raspy, and are prone to drone.

My suggestion would be to try and copy a known non droning system if you can.

Does anyone know of some sort of rule of thumb as far as placement and size of a resonator?

I don't think I have access to copy a known exhaust and if I look on the web, I wouldn't know for sure if it didn't make the droning sound

That drone will make you crazy (not to mention migrain plagued).

I come from a land down under
SB: I'm sure there are formulas out there somewhere but I've never come across one.

I used to use a book way back by Phil Irving when building pipes for my old 4 stroke motocross bikes but it's not applicable to multi cylinder motors so no use here.

Agreed 100% on the drone issue it drives me bugshit my old single 3" I had made was a pig of a thing on long drives, my new system is so quiet you can hear ALL the mechanical noise in the car. (have to turn the radio up a little)

On the highway My car makes no drone at all.

Its only low speed low RPM driving.

I'm really starting to chalk it up to the muffler. I really don't want to get rid of it, So I'm just gonna have to live with it.

What are you running for exhaust? I gotta get rid of the low rpm drone(especially under a load, like going uphill). It wears on you after a while.

I bought one of these and will install it soon, near the rear diff area like the Tanabe exhausts are. I think this will be much better than the smaller body resonators or glass packs.

DO NOT just buy a new part, I had a bad drone or hum sound and thought it would get fixed if I replaced the muffler. I learned the entire exhaust seems to be tuned to work. so a 79.00 corvette muffler did not work. so now I have this on my 90 and its DAMN quiet.. And its NICE looking! There are pics close to the end of my build thread in my sig. I think I still have a video of the sound too on there.. :)

If I can remember I will try and get install pics tomorrow. My car is currently on a lift so I can get pics of the entire thing. :)
