I have to write a research paper, it's a simple assignment but i want to take it further.

i just have to write a research paper about a scientific theory, concept, etc.

i want to write about something i am not familiar with and dont know much about, and well i dont know what it is i dont know.

im going into engineering in the next few years so i want to research stuff that will help me out in the future,

current topics include:

•Effects of additives to gasoline to increase octane.
•positive and negative effects of using toluene in gasoline.
•adiabatic efficiency.

anything you guys shaddy on?, i figure if i relate it to my car or cars in general i'll put more effort into it and end up gettin a better grade.

Here's a theory:
So we're in a reality right now, some may call it a dimension, as we know there are many others. Is it not possible, that when you close your eyes to sleep, and begin sleeping, that you're "energy" is actually leaving your body or "dimension" and travelling into another dimension? Is it not possible that the reason your dreams feel so real, is because they are "real", in the sense you are physically acting them out in another dimension, but just not in your body you all associate with this time and place.

Ahahah don't sweat it over my nonsense. I just tried to come up with the coolest "out there" idea I could. Good luck with your paper.

I'm not sure if I've been insulted or not ;)

Does it have to be a theory? Speaking of Greeks, I've always been a bit fascinated by the Antikythera Mechanism and it's true purpose. Not sure if that'd fit the bill though.

There's the old acetone in fuel debate: http://tinyurl.com/bhg73

You want to write about something truly bizzare? Try explaining the effects of the quantum double slit experiment: http://tinyurl.com/pd9gy

That was cool JJ: Waves of choice making marbles (electrons)?

So did the observer collapse the wave or did the electron make a decision not to be a wave.

My head hurts now.. LOL

Arrrggg.. This is the best answer I can find so far.

The answer is that each individual photon must – in order to have produced an interference pattern -- have gone through both slits! This, the simplest of quantum weirdness experiments, has been the basis of many of the unintuitive interpretations of quantum physics. We can see, perhaps, how physicists might conclude, for example, that a particle of light is not a particle until it is measured at the screen. It turns out that the particle of light is rather a wave before it is measured. But it is not a wave in the ocean-wave sense. It is not a wave of matter but rather, it turns out that it is apparently a wave of probability. That is, the elementary particles making up the trees, people, and planets -- what we see around us -- are apparently just distributions of likelihood until they are measured (that is, measured or observed). So much for the Victorian view of solid matter!

The Copenhagen interpretation posits the existence of probability waves which describe the likelihood of finding the particle at a given location. Until the particle is detected at any location along this probability wave, it effectively exists at every point. Thus, when the particle could be passing through either of the two slits, it will actually pass through both, and so an interference pattern results. But if the particle is detected at one of the two slits, then it can no longer be passing through both - it must exist at one or the other, and so no interference pattern appears.

This is similar to the path integral formulation of quantum mechanics provided by Richard Feynman (although Feynman stresses that this is merely a mathematical description, not an attempt to describe some "real" process that we cannot see), in which a particle such as a photon takes every possible path through space-time to get from point A to point B. In the double-slit experiment, point A might be the emitter, and point B the screen upon which the interference pattern appears, and a particle takes every possible path - through both slits at once - to get from A to B. When a detector is placed at one of the slits, the situation changes, and we now have a different point B at the detector, and a new path between the detector and the screen - upon which the interference pattern no longer appears).

Jet Jock, I would NEVER insult you or your intelligence. You just came to mind when I read his thread........lol

Joel........What the heck was that all about? I read the whole post, but I think I read it too fast and didn't comprehend all of it. I know that surprises you, that I didn't comprehend it. Between you and JJ, I may end up being a gentleman and a scholar just by reading SM posts.

And, for the record I always thought it was..........Mind over matter, if you don't mind, it don't matter.............;)

SH: If you look at Jetjocks second link there is a 5 min movie clip explaining the of the "double slit experiment" a mystery in quantum mechanics.

What I posted was 3 possible reasons I found as why it happens, but I don't think anything has been proven one way or another as to what is really going on..
:dunno:

Yeah Joel, I apologize. I mean, I knew what it was about, but I was just acting like I couldn't understand it. I watched the little video and found it really fascinating, because unlike you, I couldn't offer a logical explanation. At least you came up with three of them. Does that mean that you are three times smarter than I am? I would say at least three. For the record I gave you rep points for at least trying to shed some light on the subject............lol and mad respect!!!!!!

Hahahaha no, I am not any smarter, I just don't like mysteries so I searched a bit trying to explain it. Found some stuff and paisted it..;)

It's actually cool because it is going to revolutionize(if it has not already) the way people send secure information. "quantum communications"
