I've got the pre-cat from my 88 turbo that I'm looking to get rid of. I know there are a few guys out there that buy them for a few bucks to get the plat out of them. If any of you are reading this, please drop me a line.

Also, I've got the cat from the same car... this one is a bit more interesting. I pulled the cat off while replacing the DP to change out the old rusted hardware for some new stuff. The bolts that were in place a thoroughly rusted into the front flange on the cat, so putting it back on will be a serious pain in the ass. I'd be willing to trade straight up for a gutted cat if someone wants to swap for mine to pull the plat out.

I'm gonna go work on drilling those old bolts out of my cat, so call my cell if you're interested. 518-495-1508. Local deals are preferred to save time, but not required.

Thanks!
-Travis

Go down to a local garage and ask what they do with their old cats.
Their core guy will give you anywhere between $20-$50 for it.

selling used cats is illegal just an fyi. there are several other materials in cats that also make them hazardous.

I'm pretty sure it is illegal to buy used cats, no junkyard will sell them to you. I know this because the cat on my honda insight hybrid needs to be replaced and the dealer wants $1200 for it :(

But if you're selling them to a recycler I don't see anything wrong with it. You're just not supposed to buy/sell used cats for use in a car.

That's what I was getting at. ;p

That's easy! Bury it. Be careful tho, if you live in a flood plain, dead cats do float and are hard to get to sink... :puke:

Why not just go straight pipes for that bad boy, it's not like it'll fail standard emissions tests. :D
oh and the stuff they use inside of cats can be sold for about 60 bucks if you know the right people.

i think there's 2 or 3 damn cats on my car..... and they have sensors to detect the nox or temp in and out or something like that, and if they're off it trips the check engine light telling you to get it serviced.... also the car is designed to put out a certain amount of nox out... if the cats functioning better the car leans out more and you get better gas mileage... as it is now my mileage is down about 7-10mpg from what it used to be.... (i average about 48mpg now, but it should be more like 55mpg).

i'm waiting for my supra to get finished with some electrical work and then i'm selling that stupid car... but the check engine light is gonna cause me problems :( .... i'll just tell them straight out what it needs from the dealer and have to swallow part of the cost I guess..

I've heard this a few times, but nobody seems to know which "right people" I should be talking to. I don't even need to make $60 off of it, I was just hoping for something.

Does anyone know who buys used cats?

Ahhhh!

So with having all these cats in your exhaust,

is this where the expression,

"She purrs like a kitten" came from?

  :biglaugh: :biglaugh:

Just look for a few guys in unmarked police cars with badges hanging off of their belt buckle.

I'm sure they'll be interested in what you have.

Do you know anyone who works @ a car dealer? In the shop or parts that is. We have "scrap" guys coming by all the time wanting old cats, radiators, junk engines, etc.......

Both CARB and the EPA do not allow the replacement of a catalytic converter with non-exempt "high flow" performance replacement unit. In fact, it is technically not legal to even replace a converter unless it has been proven by technician to have failed, and then it can only be replaced with an exempt OEM equivalent unit.

and then....

http://www.epa.gov/otaq/cert/factshts/catcvrts.pdf said:
EPA considers it a violation of the policy to install a used converter from a salvage yard or
sell it for reuse unless it has been properly tested and labeled. Similarly, it is a violation to install an untested used converter brought in by a customer, even if the customer insists that the used converter came off his/her vehicle.

http://www.catalyticconverter.org/index.htm

also a neat site to check out. so in recap it is ILLEGAL to see a used cat unless you have it tested that it will work. i was unable to find mention of it with junkyards but i do know that the materials inside cats have been known to cause cancer and contain hazardous materials. In this case its similiar to taking used oil or a broken tv to a junkyard/recycler in that it mush be disposed of in a proper fashion in accordance with the law. How far that liability extends to the seller is unclear.
