A friend of a friend bought a used laptop and the previous owner didnt format the drive. They want to login and setup/delete accounts to use it without having to format/reinstall.

I said, format/reinstall but noone listens to me, they want to try and login some how...

Format/reinstall anyways. They'll probably be happier they did in the long run.

Same here, you never know what kind of garbage they had hiding in there in the form of nasty spyware/trojan/rootkit.. whether intentional or otherwise.

I wouldn't trust anyone these days.

you can try going into safe mode bby pressing f8 when the computer is booting up then press ctrl alt + delete and type administrator as the user name and see if you can get in with no password (default). Then go to start >> run and type cmd >> press enter. then type net user >>press enter see the user name that you want to change and type net user [username] * >>press enter ...type in new password>>press enter >>retype password . and your set.
if that dosent work OPHCRACK(google it) is a good program to get the username and passwords for all the accounts on windows os. you just make a boot disk and have your computer run from the cd drive then you run the program and it should tell you the username and passwords of all users. Also

i have a CD that i have licensed that all you have to do is put the CD in and set it as the boot master. After it boots it will goto a menu and it will allow u to reset any account on XP to reset the password to blank.

Useful CD =)

I have a cd like that. Worked great even on VISTA!!! Removed the password on the account and booted right into windows. I have used it alot for friends that forgot passwords.

I wanted HD-DVD to win, but i guess the BDA bribed more people in the end.

Still, at least i can finally settle on a format without worrying about it becoming obsolete...now the trick is to find a BD burner drive for less than $1000....
