General questions for a general thread

Okay, so this is my attempt to create a thread so that I don't have to take up forum space with multiple threads.

There may be some pretty easy questions (to you, otherwise I wouldn't be askin' haha) but I encourage and condone flaming if necessary. I can handle it :D

Also I would like to stress the fact that I have searched for all the questions I ask or may ask in the future, I like the search button, he's my buddy.

So I suppose I'll get right to it..

To start off, I have an '89 with no airbags (shweet) and i would like to purchase this Nardi Personal Grinta for my baby(pictured below). Now the question is, do I have to get a hub for it? or if I take off my stock wheel, will this go right on? Now I'm not asking to be cheap, I'm just curious because I feel that the wheel by itself would look cleaner than adding a hub to it too. Granted, if a hub is necessary, that's fine, I would just like to know if it goes right on stock set up. I really dig this wheel as it will help match my blue interior.

Next up on the list is this bad boy. I have always like AEM's products, they seem to have really great quality in there work. Now it is a plug and play unit (thank god, wiring is legit a phobia to me lol) and i would be getting it tuned by a professional. To me vehicle dynamics and understanding those maps +/- stuff= lolwhat. The question following for this awesome product is: If i get this professionally tuned, does that mean i have to run the AFM? As in, because it will be tuned, can I run a custom hard intake pipe from filter to turbo without the AFM? (like a maft-pro set-up per se)

Stay tuned for more silly/newb'ish questions!

But in all seriousness, I really would like to thank everyone in advanced for your input.

Okay, so I did a little more poking around, and apparently it's a 'boss' kit? It is what came up on google. Does this sound about right? And if so, does it come in any other fashion than the 'ribbed' style? (smooth)

And about the afm deletion (told ya a lot of ?'s :D ) is it as simple as just disconnecting it and putting the new pipe on?

Or is it more involved and require certain wiring.

The fact that AEM's website says it's completely PnP (i know, take it with a grain of salt) is what makes me like it, I don't want to have to get into a whole wiring fiasco with the afm.

thanks again

Wow, I'm going to be 100% honest, I truly was not expecting that response. So even though I'm capable of actually installing the EMS itself. there is really no point. It has to get tuned by the shop anyways. But a good thing is that since it is PnP the shop shouldn't charge me that much to install. Tune on the other hand, bleh that's probably going to be a little bit.

Hey thank you for the input!

The more you do your self the cheaper.

I would remove glove box for them pretty simple and that way it should take them all but 3min to swap the ecu

Oh you aren't kidding, I learned that a while ago with my Talon. Looking back, there was so much stuff i could have done to the car before it had gone to the shop and just save so much $$ on just time/labor alone.

And yeah, the 'install' of the EMs should be nothing. I'm going to see when the time comes, if they can just charge me for the tune, and not the $85 minimum labor charge/hr if the car is all set up for them.

Not going to lie, it's been a while since upgrading a car, I'm very excited!

Edit: I'm starting to think that i should get the perforated leather steering wheel instead of the suede. I googled it, and a lot of separate forums/members state the visible wear on it :/

ninja edit: I suppose it shouldn't be too bad considering my little impreza is the DD... Hmm

I like the way suede feels.

The aem ems comes with a base tune but I've heard/read its only to start the car so you can continue the tuning process.

But Standalone is the way to go for sure but you have to pay to play.

I'll be going Maft pro for my setup. Currently running a APEXI SAFC to tune and to be honest its not much of a gain as something to help control AFR'S for reliability

I'll add that the AEM isn't the end-all of products, even with the plug-n-pray setup. It's not bad, just that PnP isn't the criteria you should be looking at for an ECU.

Instead, find a local tuner that is good, talk to them about what product they like, and buy what they suggest.

I would gladly pay a few more $$$ on the installation if it means the tuner gets to work with something they are very familiar with. You'll spend more on the wiring, but less on the tuning fees, so it usually works out anyway.

Oh, I definitely understand that, in the end, it's all about who i find and what they are comfortable with.

My whole thing tough, is that i don't like wire splicing, cutting, adding/removing etc. I try to keep it as simple as possible. The last thing i want is electrical problems. Even if installed by an Ecu wizard, there is potential problems to be had with wiring.

I'm going to try to do some research and see if there is even a shop around my in the middle of nowhere town..I wish I lived back in NY still, couple reputable people there lol.

I'll tell ya being in Tucson there isn't anyone that I know around here that can tune a AEM for a supra.

I would have to drive to phoenix or chandler

Momo is the only company that makes a hub for our cars. I think it was about 100 bucks when i bought mine. I would not be so scared of wiring. Any good shop has ALOT of wiring experiance. In the tuner world wiring is part of the deal. I would much rather have a good reliable tune that will handle weather changes (aem v1 will not) then a stock wiring harness.

Okay so, I've been digging around a bit and well, maybe the aem v1 is not going to be the best option. Just had a convo with Aaron from Driftmotion (really stand up guy) and he actually enlightened me on some stuff I didn't know.

One of the main things are that, it really isn't 'plug and play'. By deleting the afm, you then have to have a map sensor (some general ones will work) and that'll have to be wired in to the ecu or harness.<--something like that lol

Not only that, supposedly the v1 had igniter problems as well.

Aaron is currently working on, well really just awaiting feedback, on a set up he is currently doing. It's a honda v2 EMS with the supra harnesses and what not, that will also have the map sensor wires already wired in (big plus! true pnp)

So I'm awaiting that whole ordeal and hopefully everything pans out well and the aem ems can come into fruition.

Now the other thing

To: Crypton2006

With what you said, am i not going to be able to use that personal steering wheel?

I had found this on amazon, and i'm wondering what your opinion is on this. Is this what i need? will this make the wheel bolt right up?

Edit: you may have to click the image to make it a little bigger, helps to be able to read it haha.

I forget who makes a hub that fits the Nardi, but they are a company that makes steering wheels and hubs, relatively new, NRG perhaps? I looked into that a while back, you might try them.

Okay so, just got off the phone with them and.. good news!!

Any quick release they sell (except the thin version) i.e. 1.0 2.0 2.5 3.0 etc along with the hub adapter part # SRK121H will fit the Nardi wheel i want!

Yes, thank you everyone for the help
